How much do spend on annual vacations?

Anonymous
My family and DH’s family never took family vacations. It’s taken a lot for DH to finally agree to a big trip (out of country for 2 weeks). I realize everyone’s budget and priorities are different but for those that commit to an annual out of US trip, how much do you spend for a family of 4 or 5?

So far in lodging and flights we are at about $6,500 for 5 of us. That includes a really expensive in country flight. I expect we will spend maybe another $2,500 in food and activities.

This feels uncomfortable for us but it’s just not our norm. I’m excited and hope this gives DH the travel bug we need.

This is going to be very dependent on income and net worth, plus priorities.

We make several million per year and are UHNW. Our family of 5 usually spends $20-25k for a week in the caribbean. For better locales it goes up from there.

Probably about 30K but we also have a beach house a couple hours away. We are UMC in a low cost of living area

We spend $8k for a family of 3, but I use points hacking, home exchange, and am in general a bargain hunter. So this actually equals several international trips per year.

2 weeks out of the country is about $15k for our family of four. We are cost conscious, but flights, hotels and eating out/excursions add up. I don’t regret any of the trips we’ve taken. To me, it’s a wonderful use of money.

That is very reasonable for a 2 week overseas trip including flight costs, no matter where overseas you are talking.

Exact same here. Family of 3. Use home exchange for 2 week international trips. I direct deposit into a vacation account so I have an easier time spending the money.

Usually spend about $12,000 for a week in Florida at spring break and then $10,000 for a week at the beach. We don’t do a ton of excursions so that keeps the cost down.

That’s actually quite a bit for a week in Florida

$6500 for flights and lodging for a family of 4 seems impressively low to go overseas. Just our 4 plane tickets this summer to europe are $6000.

I think our 2 week trip this summer will be about $12-15,000

$20k per year. We’ve told our kids point blank that we’d rather spend this money with them now than leave it to them to now it after we’re gone.

OP, you asked the wrong crowd. These folks are hobnobbing with the jet set. At some point, its all about what's fun to you, and what's value to you. Do you need a private yacht? Is your luggage designer? Do you need to scream "wealthy" when you travel? I'd rather spend $2000 and have fun, than $25K and stuck with the upper crust and their judgements.

Have fun, save your money,,,

What website do you use for home exchange? And do you recommend?
