| My DD is on amoxicillin, and on day 7 developed a leg rash. She had the same issue twice as a toddler. Online it suggests that amoxicillin rashes happen once in a lifetime and you’re ok the next time you take it. Does anyone have experience with amoxicillin rashes every time it’s taken? |
| My 3 year old got hives so we marked her as allergic to amoxicillan, and they have been giving her alternatives for years. Apparently they grow out of it but we haven't tried. She's 8 now so not too worried. |
| My daughter had a rash at the end of Amoxicillin. We were told it is a common side effect and not likely an allergy when it comes at the end. They said you do not want to have the allergy designation just based on a rash because you will always be giving a stronger medication than you likely need. She was a pretty healthy kid and I do not think she had it again so ?? |

I've always been told by my somewhat kooky mother that I'm allergic to amoxicillin. It's all I've ever written on forms - food or medicine.
A PCP advised me to look into it so I talked to an allergist. He told me there was a period of time when I was a child (born in 1982) that diagnosing amoxicillin allergy was very common. Over diagnosed. He said that the next time a penicilin or related drug was indicated for me that I should take it and see what happens. |
| If your DC has hives, then it is an allergy. If it is a rash, then it is a side effect and not a problem. |
| Tell the pediatrician. There are alternatives |
| We haven't tried again with my now teen. There were always other options. |
| That’s an allergy! My kids both have this. They take something else. We can do allergy testing when they are older and see if they are still allergic. I do it too and take z packs. No big deal. |
Allergic. Why would you keep giving this? |
| It can happen. We had the rash and avoid it now. |
This was my doctor’s advice as well when we had the same thing happen years ago. OP, why don’t take your kid to the doctor to see the rash when it happens? The doctor will be able to distinguish between whether it’s an allergy or a reaction (which is annoying but not an allergy). |
How are you able to diagnose an allergy when a rash is a known side effect? |
No it’s not. |
Except for the massive antibiotic resistance to z packs, being caused by z packs, etc Terrible medication to take |
| Can you test for this? |
