Teacher Appreciation Week

Anonymous
Hi All,

How does your school handle donations or gift cards to teachers for teacher appreciation week? Are all donations split equally among all the staff members (over 100) at a school? Or do classroom teachers get more? How do you handle the specialists and aides? Thanks.

At our school (ES) individual classes do the classroom teacher gifts based on how generous the class is. Same with any aides assigned to a class. Specialists and aides who aren't assigned to a specific class get money from the PTA funds, and that depends on how much they have that year.

I agree that the majority of the gift cards should go to the teachers and not be split evenly across the board to all staff members. I think it is a nice gesture to try to give something to everyone to show our appreciation, however it should be based on some kind of tiered system where classroom teachers get the most, then specials, etc.

we call ours teacher and staff appreciation week and split across all workers. I’m glad it’s done that way because it would be so annoying to have to send money multiple times for every appreciation holiday a school has - custodial, cafeteria, reading day, administrative, nurse, bus driver…the list goes on. I like the one and done concept where everyone is included. Our classroom teachers also get gift collections for birthday, holiday and end of year thank yous.

I like the idea I just don't think it should be evenly split especially if they are low on funds.

Split evenly across staff. The janitor cleaning up vomit and urine deserves just as much as the teachers and principal.

There is a separate custodian and cafeteria workers week.

Why do you value the work of one educator over another? What about DEI?

Sorry mean to reply on this one-our school does not have a separate week. They deserve to be treated well and thanked too.

This. This is what is happening at Navy ES and unfortunately that thread was locked by someone in the PTO when it was pointed out. They aren’t getting enough donations because parents don’t want to split it evenly among all the staff members.

That’s why the Navy thread was locked? That’s odd.

No. That is not why the thread was locked. Read the 79 pages of comments before it and you’ll quickly realize why it was locked. Nothing to do with the PTO or teacher appreciation week. That just happened to be the last thread the was posted.

I did. I still don’t see why it got locked.

+1 I don’t either. I asked Jeff to reopen it. If not, I’ll start a new thread.

I'm going to have to agree that the custodian should get good gift cards. They literally clean up sh*t.

There is a separate time of year to appreciate them. They (like teachers) will often get food, presents, gift cards, etc.
