How do your college students take class notes?

Paper/notebook?

Computer? Software? Notion or other app?

My son would like to begin preparing for college by implementing best organization practices now in high school. He is curious if any older students have methods or tools that are currently the standard? His high school classmates are all over the map. He is open to suggestions so he can try a few out. Thanks!

Yes. In a paper notebook, but most others use note taking devices or ipads. Mine is old school.

Mine started in HS taking notes on his touchscreen laptop then switched over to an Android tablet. Continues in college.

He uses Microsoft OneNote to take notes and accesses it across all devices. He also uses it to create assignments that include drawings, prints to pdf and submit.

Depends on the class. In high school our student used notebooks, had their laptop with them but it was used for in-class assignments. In college they have a laptop, an iPad and notebooks. They have told us they use a notebook and the laptop for class - primarily notebook for notes, the laptop to follow in class problem sets and labs. The iPad for working on problem sets. I think each student will find what works best, how they like to track things and what the class requires. While our student doesn't like writing - prefers typing - they have noticed that jotting things down in a notebook has been easier to remember and easier to find when they go back to study for a test.

Professor here (sciences)- my students mostly use tablets. Because of formulas it is nearly impossible to take notes while typing on a laptop. In a 100 person lecture I would say probably 10 or less are using paper.

Mine takes notes on his laptop. If it's a class that's difficult for him, he will often rewrite his notes by hand later. He uses a modified Cornell method that he's used since 9th grade.

OP. I think he’s going to need to level up! Will share all of this with him, with thanks.

He is undecided (too young), likely to be finance/econ plus a minor just for the love of it (might be a studio art if possible).

But he can def get rolling by reading up and trying different methods. Cheers!

iPad, but beware some professors don’t let students use electronic devices in class.
