Knee cracking

My knee is cracking- had an xray- dr could feel cartilage moving underneath that felt weird, but x ray didn't find anything.

Anyone experienced this before? He will prescribe an MRI as next step, but didn't seem that into the idea of it...

Used to be an avid runner and the sensitivity from this is preventing it...
