Help me help my kid

Anonymous
My child attends 4th grade in a large MCPS school. I realize she is not getting what she needs in his IEP and is falling even more behind. Basically, the school is crowded and understaffed. So I'm trying to help her by finding out what they are teaching and going over it with her. She is very shy, quiet and inattentive- but teacher does not seem to realize it. Anyway, what is the best way to find out what's going on and to help her stay on top of her schoolwork? Also, can teacher tell when you look in ParentVue?

Ask her to bring home her textbook and workbook everyday so you can keep track of what she’s learning in class.

Every time you look at ParentVUE, a date/time is recorded. Whenever a document shared (such as a report card) is viewed, it records who viewed it (mom/dad/guardian) and when.

What is your daughter or son’s IEP for? Speech? Academic? There should be a special educator that supports your child that can address their goals. How are you determining that your child is falling more behind?

Canvas is more helpful than ParentVue for tracking what your kid is doing. Use her password to get in because you will see more.

Ask for a parent teacher conference.

Do you have a copy of the class syllabus that you can follow? If not ask the teacher for one.

Ask the teacher to send next week’s assignments every Friday so you can review upcoming work.

If you don’t feel like they’re supporting her I would schedule a teacher meeting. If that doesn’t resolve the issue go to the Principal.
I think mcps had it rough right now, too many SN kids with IEPs in mainstream classes with not enough staff to manage it.

Private therapies, tutors or work with her at home.

LMAO

What 4th grader in MCPS has a textbook or a workbook?

I can’t imagine a teacher being able to do that. That’s asking a lot!

Look at her schoolwork and work with her at home.

I wouldn’t be surprised if none comes home - I don’t see anything from lost subjects.

Does she need more pull out hours in her IEP?

A shy inattentive girl is not going to get much attention. Many MCPS kids are not getting much homework. I would ask the teacher to start sending stuff home to work on. If you go on Parent Vue and look under Grade Book, you can find current graded assignments (you have to click a bit to find).

I would ask the counselor to take her for lunch bunches to work on shyness.
I would do private tutoring to target subjects.
Does she get pull out for math/reading? I would start emailing to find out levels and how often she is getting service.
