DP. That PP was right. Kids won't eat cabbage, no matter how long its shelf life is. The meals from FCPS vary from good to a bit strange (whole wheat cinnamon rolls?). But not bad. I wonder who is complaining. |
The fact that poor Americans have to eat fast food at home is all the more reason to make school meals healthier. And healthier doesn’t mean cabbage and organic puréed leeks. There are plenty of foods that are much healthier than burgers and hot dogs and fruit in syrup. Kids all around the world manage to eat decent food, I think Americans should be able to “endure” healthy food as well. |
| Hunger is the best appetizer. Schedule healthier lunches later in the school day. |
Speak for yourself. My child loves cabbage. She'll eat a whole jar of rotkraut. |
Yep apparently PP thinks that healthy food means sophisticated and expensive. Healthy food can be simple, delicious and it doesn’t have to be organic. I think PP and others like her are getting defensive since they like eating crap so they feel like this is a personal assault. |
This too. Not sure how it would work though because of capacity issues. But my now third grader used to have lunch at 10:30 am. That’s not lunch. That’s a snack. Of course she wasn’t hungry. |
I like sauerkraut but most people don't, if they weren't raised on it. Since DH doesn't like it, my kids don't like it either. How many of your kid's friends would eat it? |
Cabbage rolls are delicious. My kids love them. That being said healthy food isn’t just beets, cabbage, broccoli and organic leeks. PP has a very limited idea of what healthy is. |
I don't think i ate cabbage aside from possibly coleslaw until high school. I still love sauerkraut. My daughter's best friends aren't picky eaters and are used to eating a wide variety of ethnic foods so I'm sure they'd eat it, too. |
processed means shelf stable and that's what makes unhealthy food cheaper than health food. A portion of fresh veggies may be cheap, but if you're losing a large portion to spoilage, it is no longer cheaper |
| Are non-poor people going to pick up free school food now? |
Do you have experience with the local school lunches? All this criticism when they're not bad, not unhealthy. |
Oh Lord I would give anything for Romanian cabbage rolls right now. |
Yes most people don’t eat it. But we are not talking about serving sauerkraut. We are talking about feeding children healthier food. |
I was thinking about it, but I'm not sure after someone commented that they ran out in some places. We're in an area with a lot of low-income families. I'd feel terrible if I took food and then there wasn't enough for someone who lost their job. |
