You are all responding to an old thread reactivated on 11/25. OP is long gone.

For grins, I just did the net price calculator for UVA and Northwestern for us. (We are instate VA, though). 200k income and the assets you’d expect to go with that.

Uva =35k. (Let’s assume 65k out of state)
northwestern =81k.

So DC is a freshman, and before this I would have had him consider Northwestern based in his grades and interest. Not so much anymore. We’ve saved for in state schools and there are some great schools in VA. Maybe for grad school.

If I were in CT and the choice was UConn or Northwestern, different story. That said, 81k a year man.

Both good at the easier majors. NW is better. Both not good for the difficult majors.

I'm not sure what this means. NP here; DC is in the engineering school at NU. I think I know what you mean by "easier majors" as NU has top programs in communications, journalism, and many of the liberal arts, but they are also top ranked in majors that would traditionally be considered "difficult" as well, like mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, industrial engineering, material science, chemistry, economics... so not sure what you mean.

What? NU is excellent at the so called difficult majors.

I think you'll find that the East Coast self-absorbedness of many of the posters on DCUM means they just immediately assume a school in so-called "fly-over country" could be as strong as Northwestern actually is. I'm originally from Michigan and it's strange to even see Northwestern being compared to UVA in the first place, with no offense intended to UVA. They're just very different schools by nature.

I think you'll find that the East Coast self-absorbedness of many of the posters on DCUM means they just immediately assume a school in so-called "fly-over country" could never be as strong as Northwestern actually is. It has never made sense to me why they call it Northwestern. It is in the Midwest, hell it's not even geographically located in the Northwest of the Midwest region. Come to think of it, it is not even located in the Northwest of Illinois or Chicago. For that purpose I would say UVA is the better school, it is actually named appropriately for the geographic location for which it is named.

Per google, Northwestern University has this name because it was established when Illinois was a part of the Northwest territory of the USA. The university was chartered to serve what was the Northwest Territory, now considered the Midwest."

What? I'm from the Northeast and Northwestern (and Michigan) were both hot colleges 20 years ago with top 10% kids.

UVA, not so much. Only one kid went there - a LAX nut. If anything, people from the Northeast looked down on schools in the South. Particularly public schools.

It was sarcasm to highlight some of the inane and senseless responses to the OP's original question. I do appreciate you taking the time to look it up and respond though...
