people who can't spare 20 bucks usually don't have internet access, so unless some posters here are using the public library computers, it really shouldn't encompass those posting here...and if they're stealing a wifi signal, then they have wireless devices...which are a luxury in themselves |
I have a former colleague who is Haitian. Both his and his wife's family are still in Haiti. I contacted him to see how they were doing after the earthquake. My friend's family survived fairly well, with one cousin suffering two broken legs. Tragically, his wife's family lost 12 members. That number may rise as they uncover more bodies. I asked for a suggestion to support Haiti at this time and he suggested contributing to his church which is organizing a relief effort. I'd also encourage others who are able to also support this initiative. Notably, the Church is also accepting in kind contributions. Further information can be found on the Church's website:

Everyone in the entire United States (who pays taxes) has donated to Haiti. How else would the U.S. be providing aid? |
Your brain on Limbaugh... |
I feel bad for those who donated to Yele and Wyclef Jean via their cell phones. Apparently, handling fees are automatically deducted before anything is given to the charity, and the charity has a bad reputation. Just shows the importance of researching a charity before making a knee jerk reaction. |
Yes, but Haiti needs a LOT more money than what the U.S has offered in aid in order to recover. And I wouldn't call paying taxes 'donating money'. One is forced on you whether you like it or not, the other is an act of charity and generosity because you care about your (global) community. |
