Relax people! stop feeding the hysteria!

Well, I have a 92 year old grandma with lung disease and parents in their 60s, one of whom has underlying health problems, so yeah — I’m somewhat concerned.

There are estimates that 40% of the population could get it. With a 3 percent fatality rate, that’s roughly 4 million deaths in the USA.

Actually the death rate for over 60s is nearer to 20%

Our govt currently hates feds anyway, why do you think they'd want to give telework?

If something isn't done immediately our health care system will be overrun. And don't tell me this is just a cold. They don't shut down the economy of China for a cold. It's like we're saying we're fine with thousands dying.

We should be teleworking. I'm not sure what the government is waiting for. I'm guessing a large chunk of government employees take the metro. Why would they want people on crowded metro cars at this point. Let people telework at least for the next month until they have a better sense of how wide spread this is. The federal government's response has been slow on all fronts, basically passing up the window of opportunity for containment. We can fully shut down the government for a month for a wall that will never be built, but we can't authorize telework to stop deaths and our healthcare system from being overwhelmed? Tell government employees to telework and limit social contact, and focus our resources on testing retirement homes and having plans to help those most vulnerable.

You know there are several huge agencies that have no one who can telework, right? Don't generalize about what the federal government writ large can do.

This is not all or nothing. They should tell those who can telework to telework.

+1. If I had to go in, I certainly would prefer less commuters around me. Luckily, my agency already waived their rules regarding telework, so we can take if needed.

According to the VA Dept of Health, there are no pending cases in Northern VA right now.

We must close the bridges.

Exactly. I might be the only person who has to go into my office, but keep the rest of them and their germs home please!

Agencies are empowered to make their own decisions. Please keep up.

Bring it on. The only ones dying are old and immuno compromised people. This will feel like a bad chest cold. Let me develop some antibodies now, get two weeks off work, and build some tolerance before it mutates into something worse

Reading DCUM it's apparent that most people on this site are in their 30s and DGAF about people 40s and up. They also don't seem to realize that even if most 30-40 year olds who have serious complications don't die, they almost certainly will if the hospitals are overwhelmed and all the ventilators are taken. When your significant other is drowning in their lung fluid and you can't get a hospital bed talk tell us then about how telework and closing schools was such a terrible idea.

I'm in agreement with you about the hospital burden, etc. But realistically, how does teleworking and closing schools work? Its not just for 2 weeks unless you stop movement in the state. People will come.from other states/countries. So every time a person comes, the quarantine has to start over. And what about the people who aren't fortunate enough to have job stability. Kids home from school means you have to stay home from.work. No work = no pay. These are the people who are likely working minimum wage and don't exactly have savings to fall back on for however long schools are closed. In a perfect world, people could telework and schools could close and all that. But the logistics of doing so are damn near impossible.

This is more realistic. Start with the federal employees in position to telework. Then expand as needed, as obviously private sector will fight closures or telework commands if it affects their bottom line. Versus federal agencies can't go against orders from above.

They are going to wait until it's just a few days too late with a few too may clusters, and we'll be teleworking as we watch the hospitals unable to care for all of those who need intensive care. Any sooner would be alarmist, obviously.

It really doesn't matter at this point. MoCo is tied so closely to Northern VA it's one in the same re: epidemiological spread.

To be fair, Trump gave feds Christmas Eve off. I was surprised by that move. Maybe they'll allow government wide telework if it gets worse.

All elderly with pre existing health conditions

And their deaths don't matter? Some of us have parents we'd rather not see dead.

Life ends with death. Everyone has to die of some cause. If you already have pre-existing health conditions and late in life, then you are at higher risk of dying from a health related cause, rather than a tragic accident. It isn't about not valuing life - it is about the circle of life. Italy has the second most elderly people in the world. They are going to have a higher percentage of deaths due to this.

Government-wide telework is impossible. Agencies make their own plans about telework in these situations.
