DCI or Deal

And why are OB families still trying to get into Deal if it is so bad? Why not go to a more diverse, less crowded school in your own neighborhood?

No one said it was bad. Someone noted that when comparing Deal and DCI students and their proficiency, one needs to keep in mind that the student bodies is different. As a whole DCI has more poor kids and Deal, while it has some racial and ethnic diversity, has less diversity than DCI.

And by the way, DCI has a lengthy wait list too. Both schools are in demand.

I am not knocking DCI but don’t understand why parents feel the need the bash Deal every chance they get. Deal has issues, believe me, but tearing down other schools is not going to help yours.

I guess the DCI parents are feeling bad about their school.

On the first few pages of this very long thread, most of the Deal "bashing" was being done by disillusioned Deal parents. That's what you get on these boards -- boosters and people who are disgruntled or disenchanted. The reality is always somewhere in the middle.

Can’t you see you just did exactly the same thing!?!

We had a very bad experience at dci. Teachers discourage parent involvement, rampant bullying, and lots of behavioral problems. I’d go with Deal.

Don't discount PP experience, but my 2 kids and myself have had exactly the opposite experience. There are many opportunities for parental involvement (parent book club, frequent communication on homework, invitations to club field trips, etc.) That said, I can see dramatic differences at DCI on things like this from grade to grade and from year to year... I happen to think its getting better on all fronts.

PP here. True enough. I can concede that these things do vary from year to year. But in general, I’ve never heard any parent say anything more than it was “ok” at DCI. And I’ve had many tell me they wanted to pull their kids. I don’t think it will get any better. I think it will remain “ok”.

I can’t believe this topic got so many pages. There is no comparison.

exactly. DCI is light years ahead of Deal. Other than self-segregation, I can't imagine sending my kid to Deal over DCI.

I'm in the same position and sending my kid to DCI. She is a great student and will likely do well anywhere and I don't want her to lose her Spanish or her friends if she doesn't have to. Plus since we are in-bounds for Deal, if DCI turns out to be disaster we can just enroll in Deal. We feel lucky to have the choice.

Question for the DCI parents - is it true that in high school students are only in one academic class in their target language per year?

I saw a friend at a party whose DC is a 9th grader and she mentioned this in passing (Spanish track). Didn't have a chance to follow up but that seems not in keeping with what was promised at the outset.

Can anyone shed any light or provide context?
