APS middle school boundary process

Actually, it would. It would take all of the low income housing in south Barcroft, the entire Barcroft apartments and all the mid-Pike low income housing and put it into jefferson. The school would gain some middle income kids in Barcorft sfh, but not enough to overcome the loss of wealthy sfh north of 50. Jefferson would become the new Kenmore. This would completely change the demographics of the school, I know these PUs well.

We are in the Jefferson boundary in every scenario, but I don't really understand the Alignment map. The Jefferson boundaries seem so much smaller than all the other boundaries. How will that help with the SEVERE overcrowding at Gunston? And those families from across 50 who walk will have to bus to Swanson? Now that seems like a huge waste of tax payer dollars.

First, stop with the name calling. Second, many of the scenarios presented would still allow for biking if not walking, even to Kenmore (are you familiar with the trail system?). Just because you wouldn't want your kids to bike there does not mean it wouldn't be possible. Third, can anyone here prove that any of the scenarios reduce the number of walkers at any school? Or is it just that your kids could no longer walk to the school of your choice?

Yes my son will still be able to bike to school, along route 50, rather than walking 2 short blocks from our house! Those of you all for the demographic realignments are happy to chime in from the safety of your Williamsburg zone (and let our kids more to the south do the heavy lifting in the name of diversity).

By the way (for those of you ready to name call) we are a mixed race family. Diversity is great but common sense is better.

would it be ok with you if county offered families like yours the options to be bused to either Kenmore or WMS?

Np here. What does this email end mean--family like yours. Diversity is really about poverty. Not mixed families.

Because that map was more focused on keeping kids together from MS->HS (alignment) than it was about utilizing space (efficiency).

I didn't notice the change to the Gunston/Jefferson boundary. You're probably right that this does increase fr/l rate at Jefferson. Though, perhaps it just balances it across South Arlington (likely lowers it at Kenmore and Gunston).

I wonder if they tweaked this map to keep Barcroft and Arlington Forest (southside) in Kenmore, kept Ashton Heights at Jefferson, and then moved some of the PU's closer to Stratford, like around Glebe ES back into the Stratford boundary, how that would look in terms of alignment/proximity/diversity.

Folks, in this fight diversity means economic diversity, not racial diversity.

Making Kenmore more balanced, yet unbalancing Jefferson isn't really solving the segregation in this county, it is just moving it from one school to another. The wealthy north Arlington middle schools need some diversity. Separate is NOT EQUAL.

North Arlington parents, you throw a fit and block any effort by the county and developers to build low income housing in your neighborhood so your neighborhoods and neighborhood schools don't have really any poorer kids. Hmmm, then you cry about how you want your kids to walk to your "neighborhood" school. So, you are enabling and reinforcing the segregation in our county. Yes, in 2017 we have to talk about segregation. Shame on you.

Welcome to America. It's that way everywhere...and pretty much most of Europe as well. The poor live in lower cost areas. Sometimes also in public housing.

When people achieve success/upward mobility, they move their families to better school districts.

You are very lucky to be in Arlington County, because unlike the District and other parts of the Country, you have the same high caliber teachers and principals and $$ per pupil in even the more diverse and lower SES schools.

Quit acting like a goddamn crime is being committed. The only crime is that you were banking on moving or the schools to have gentrified more before your snowflake was of school age. You got the bigger lot/nicer house for less $ per square foot because of the school zone. Some of us went the other way with shit shacks in school zones we wanted.

Well, it's also true that most of this country is segregated. Yay us! We're not better than anywhere! And thanks for your "generosity" by allowing us to live in the same county. So charming to be reminded to kiss the rings. Can you print a sign and put it in your front yard, just in case we forget? Something like, "All are welcome here. Well not actually here, but you get the idea."

I still only see like one scenario that I'd expect people to get all riled up about. And I would like to know whether this option actually creates more bus riders or just different bus riders.

It's pretty shitty to rag on Arlington residents given that Arlington is very progressive and does prioritize AHC projects. We live in a capitalist society, a historically segregated area, and also an area that has only seen significant growth over past few decades. There are many factors why some areas are more expensive than others. That just how it's been for many years. And I t takes a long time to change that.

So quit bitching about this CONSTANTLY. You sound like an entitled tw@t.

Which one? Are you referring to one of the 5 combined? Or was it G demographics on the original slide deck from 9/12? I live in n. Arlington, I am not a huge rah, rah, everything is secondary to diversity, but G seemed to be the "most equitable" in terms of distributing poverty as much as possible across all 6 schools. OTOH, I did watch that shit show train wreck when Kaninen came in at the final hour and managed to get the least number of kids transferred to Yorktown. (So they might have a trailer in the 4th year, but let's just ensure WL gets trailers for 3 of 4 years instead. How is that fair, bi#ch? Sorry, I digress.). As I was saying, given how many shenanigans get pulled by the SB, I would very much doubt seeing that kind of distribution ever.

Enjoy the Columbia Pike Streetcar.

Enjoy your off street parking. Enjoy waiting for a smoking metro train. Enjoy your tiny kitchen. Enjoy having no closets. Enjoy your sloped backyard. Enjoy schlepping jr down to Barcroft to play ball, because your neighbor's won't allow you to have lit fields nearby. Enjoy it all.
We'll enjoy schools without drug pressure and bullying.
I'm beginning to see the light regarding demographics. I feel guilty, because the middle class kids will all be fine. Our less advantaged kids need the integration, but oh well. We can make due.
I don't want you people in my schools. Keep south Arlington dickhead free.

OMG. NP here. Both of you shut it. You do realize last time, the HS kids were reading this? This time the MS kids will be reading this thread as well.

1) there are multiple posters. I'm not arguing for integration ( this time around)
2) I'm feeling great. Thank you. I should have had this epiphany ages ago.
