I really don't understand this board's split obsession with/hatred of the Ivy League. I loved my school. I'm sure I could have had an equally great experience somewhere else and I'd likely have loved that school. It does not make me any better than anyone else that I scored well on the SAT and had the stats to get into a specific college. Lots of people have the stats, many will never apply for a variety of reasons.

I'm convinced it's flyover state fatties from the college confidential parent board.

It is not hatred of the Ivy League. It is hatred of a caste system. We are all human beings and hope for a decent life. There are some human beings that are so obsessed with money, power, status that they will always try to make sure they are at the top of every pile. The Ivy League is no golden ticket.

What is up with your hatred of people on college confidential?

I think this is simply someone full of hatred--most likely very unsatisfied with her own life. Pathetic, really.

For my kid to go to UMD, in-state, it would cost $25,700. To go to Brown (with some of the worst financial aid in the Ivy League), it's costing about $28K.

The extra $2,300 per year is worth it.
I think it makes sense if the cost is relatively the same and your child loves the school. However, if you are paying full freight, whether out of pocket--or especially if you have to borrow--it is a whole different ball of wax.

Elite grads don't rail against the elites. It's always bitter UMD or JMU moms who try to convince you their average kids are soo!! happy at their mediocre college.

There is something wrong with you.

We had only 1 child so that we could afford to pay for whatever college he got into. I was accepted into multiple ivies, but received no financial assistance and could not fathom graduating with over $100k in debt--cost was almost $50k/year at the schools where I received acceptance and my college fund was nowhere near that.

We may not be able to pay for everything, but I don't want money to be the reason my child turns down opportunity.

We make a combined $180k. We are saving approximately $10k per year in his college fund.

I have one child. If she gets into an Ivy, or similar school. I will find a way to pay what I have to. I make 170K.

I recall reading a few articles in the Times railing against prestigious colleges. Then I looked up where the columnist or their kids attend and it was Harvard, UChicago, Yale, Middlebury, never CUNY and Rutgers.

+1

UMD will cost us $25,700, whereas Brown will cost us $65k+. HHI is $220k.

Just not feasible, with two kids to get through school.

I don't understand people who don't have $150k a year to pay for 2 kids in Ivy. Our HHI is $2.3 million and $150k a year is not something that would show up on our radar screen. Even at an HHI of half that, 150k for your kids would not be a concern.

If my HHI is 2.3 mill, or even 1 mil, 150K would be manageable.

I make over the median: at about 92% nationally, at 170K. There is no way I could spend 150K on tuition. 25K, yeah.

I'm shocked how many UMC don't save or save a minimum and then force their smart kids to attend some cattle call public U with 500-seat lectures and even 400-level courses averaging 100 kids per. Public U is cheap for a reason.

I am shocked that people like you even exist much less manage to find someone with which to procreate.

Harvard has lecture courses that large. They can be fun. And not a bad way to learn. I got a lot out of Ec 10 and it's knowledge that I continue to use decades later. http://www.thecrimson.com/article/2016/9/12/fall-2016-enrollment-figures/

Public universities are cheaper, in part, because their operations are directly subsidized by state governments. It's not just economies of scale.
