If those gripers think they could do a better job for the same pay and benefits, I wish they would.

They get paid $50-110K a year for working 180 days. They get tenure, pension, health, dental and life insurance. They have every holiday, breaks and summers off. They need to go to college for 4yrs and two of them can be community college. I fail to see why they have it so bad?

Can you think of any career where the first two years of college CAN'T be at community college? My brother started at MC and is now in law school at MD. My dad went to community college and is an electrical engineer?

A teacher who went to college for only 4 years can make 48k-64k (after 10 years of step advancement, which is not guaranteed every year)

A teacher who has a Masters degree (much more common than someone with a Bachelors only) AND 60 extra grad credits on top of that can make up to 107k after 25 years of step advancements, and cannot earn more no matter how long they work as a teacher.

Not many teachers have both those credentials. Most teachers are earning 60-80k, which isn't awful, but is not exactly raking in the dough. They are also taking evening and weekend classes are part of required continuing education mandates (and spending their own money to do so) and picking up odd jobs over the summer to make ends meet because there is no income during the summer when they are "off" (forced leave).

Lastly, teachers work 216 days. Just because your kid has off doesn't mean their teacher isn't working. But yeah, they get dental, so they're just raking it in.

Oh ffs why don't YOU teach? Teaching is tough work and I'd love to see our teachers get paid 200k

Just ran across this and it seemed so appropriate...

Its not really appropriate because its a very old joke. And this discussion isn't funny in the slightest.

I'd like to see our military, firefighters, police officers, and EMT's to get paid more than $40,000 (or less) They work all hours, nights, weekends, holidays, summers, during emergencies, blizzards and other many dangerous situations. It is tough work, right?

Teacher from another district: Considering that we will have to make up these days at the end of the year, I have no problem or guilt treating this time as vacation.

Yes, it sounds like a sweet deal, doesn't it? So, why aren't you doing it? What's stopping you from getting your share of this sweet deal?

Just an update from many pages back...I posted that I had contacted a teacher last week and did not hear back.. I did at the end of the week..

And to PP...our MoCo rarely makes up snow days. The state seems to require one day be made up and the rest (over the pre-scheduled ones) are waved.

They are not waived 5 days are already built into the yearly schedule, without having to add-on at the end of year.

But it isn't like they waive what we need to teach. We still need to do the same amount of teaching, assignments, assessments, remediation, etc. as before but in less time.

Glad I had some time with family. I spent Friday to Monday grading. Starting tomorrow, we will be on a tight schedule to accomplish everything and there won't be much downtime between grading assessments.

No more than anyone else who had to miss days at work because of snow and school closure. Can we stop with the violins for your profession already?

NP who isn't a teacher here.

The point is that snow days are no more of a vacation for teachers than they are for most people in other professions who have to miss work due to snow.
