One of the smartest, nicest guys I knew in HS started at Davidson, found it too parochial, and transferred to Arizona State. He's done great for himself. Some of you are just ridiculously stuck on top-rated schools (and likely brand-name merchandise as well).

ASU is a party school for dumb but rich east coast kids. And a totally different breed from the Arizona kids who attend ASU. Everyone at ASU knows the difference.

The guy I mentioned grew up in the DC region. He was not dumb, then or now. I think he just decided he needed a change of pace from the South, and ASU provided it.

Do you mean "provincial"?

Eagle Rock and Highland Park are really eclectic neighborhoods, a lot of indigenous L.A. culture to explore there.

The pres got out of there the first chance he could. See also Crazy U.

Yeah, I know all about that. I was graduated from there. But we all call it "Oxy". Why are you saying don't call it "Oxy"?

NP, but no, parochial is a synonym for provincial. It means narrow-minded, small-town-ish, etc.

Another U of Miami full pay here. (Saved $11000 when she was rejected from NYU).

William and Mary. It was his safety school but he is actually thrilled to be going.

DH graduated from William & Mary - it's a great school and he LOVED it there. Great pick for a safety school!

I grew up in Silver Spring and went to UMCP. I didn't go home every weekend and I spread my wings just fine. My parents only "meddling" was to set the following boundaries: pick a state school or figure out how to pay the difference in tuition (not because they were being unkind; rather, they set realistic financial boundaries). We will likely do the same with our kids...although we will likely dissuade them from taking on student loans.

Just curious, PP--have you ever live anywhere else but here?

Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame. Honest to God, I have no idea if this was the right decision for her or not - but she insisted. Her great-grandmother, grandmother and mother are all SMC graduates.

What attracted your DD to Barnard and not Columbia?

She attended a two-week leadership seminar there last summer and fell in love with it. And she wanted to go to an all-women's college but near other universities (and boys). Funny because she went to a big, consolidated co-ed public high school.
