Worst dog breeds...tried it once but never again

Anonymous
I broke up with my fiance because of his unhealthy co-dependent relationship with his dog. I was highliy allergic and my only request was no dogs sleeping in the bedroom. He couldn't even do that. The dog recently died and he came crawling back, I felt bad for him but I'm not going to spend my life with someone who prioritizes the needs of a DOG over me.

Ah, there you are. The ignorant poster spouting facts like this w/o any evidence/facts to back them up. Your latter post is flatly incorrect. THAT is a fact.

Based on your post, I understand his choice.

What kind of dog was it? This is not a thread about boyfriends.

Right, because kids are so much cheaper than dogs. You sure showed her!

Also, as someone who is obsessed with my dog and also can't stand to be around kids, I'd like to point out that she's not necessarily obsessed with her dog because she doesn't have kids.

I remember walking in a park one day and coming across a girl who was walking a puppy. It tried to come near me, but I just walked past it. On the way back, I passed them again, and this time when the puppy approached me, I didn't try to walk away. Turns out, it was the most adorable, friendly puppy. I asked what its breed was and was surprised when she told me it was a pit bull. Really made me wonder if their bad reputation is completely deserved. If a pet owner socializes the dog to be friendly, it's going to be friendly.

Yes, that is exactly right. The dog needs to be trained and socialized appropriately.

Wait, Shiba inu is on my short list. I've been planning on adopting one. Can you describe the problems with their personalities?

I'm the PP that loves my shiba. They are really good dogs but their personalities are like cats. They don't really want to snuggle or be pet unless it is their idea. They also clean themselves like cats which in my opinion is a good thing because he's always clean and NEVER has potty accidents. Strong prey drive so you can't really do the off leash thing. Very loyal to the pack/territorial.

Thanks for this response! I didn't know that about the prey drive, but can live with it.

Really, good to know if you have other pets in the house.

Aw, but why would you want a dog that doesn't cuddle? That's the whole point of dogs! I love the look of Shibas, but I'd be crushed if my dog regularly shunned me.

well, they've very intelligent, sensitive, loyal dogs. and they really are affectionate, just on their own terms.

OP about the Shiba Inu... This dog is very loved and well cared for, but she is the unfriendliest animal on the planet! She is worse than a cat. This breed is also well known for skin problems and allergies, I have spent THOUSANDS on her skin problems at the vet and dermatologist. Also terrible with kids... AVOID!! Next dog I'm getting a poodle.

My shiba has had zero skin problems so far and is great with kids.

No she is actively trying to have kids and I can guarentee that once she has kids all the talk of her dog and her comapring her dog to having a child will go out the window. The poor dog will be neglected like she never imagined.

Not they don't. Many, many, many attacks are incorrectly attributed to "pit bulls". Most people can't recognize one when they see it. See if you can....

http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/findpit.html

At least have the integrity to be honest when you fail this test. Very few people pass it.

I don't own a pit and never would because of the stigma and liability attached. However, I've spent a lot of time with the breed. There are certainly some dangerous pitbulls out there. But I've never met one that wasn't just a big goofy affectionate lovebug.

Here's the CDC list of dogs most likely to kill humans.

-Pitbull-type dogs
-Rottweilers
-German Shepherds
-Husky-type dogs
-Malamutes
-Doberman Pinschers
-Chow Chows
-Great Danes
-Saint Bernards
-Wolf hybrids
-Mixed breeds

Note the "pitbull - type" wording. There are so many bully breeds incorrectly labeled as "pitbull terrier". I have two German Shepherds. Number three on the list. When most people think of German Shepherds, they think of loyal police dogs, great with kids, smart, ..... A closer look reveals that they are responsible for a lot of very serious bites. Yet, no one blinks an eye when I say I have one. Mention the word "Pit Bull" and people go nuts.

I think "pitbull-type" is fair. it is the generic description for fighting dogs with the big broad faces and stout bodies.

& of course GDS and Rotties cause a lot of harm. They are big strong jaws that fanatically defend their home and masters. Love that about them.

I've had 2 Rotties. Incredibly smart, sweet, easy to train, loveable and loving dogs. Loyal. Definitely don't mess with the family....and don't break into the house! (Had that happen....guess he didn't realize we had a Rottie...she never made a sound, just went for him. He jumped through a closed window to get away). SHed a lot though. Really only drawback--that, and big breeds have shorter lifespans, and I can't deal with that. No more dogs for me, at least not for a while.

Chow chow. Even at the Westmister Dog Show the judge said chows tended to be mean!
