How often do you color your hair (to cover grey)?

Anonymous
My hair is 99% white. It was dark brown so I color every 4 weeks.
I HATE the expense, but I am so not capable of doing it myself.

Usually every 5/6 weeks. Realistically, it needs it after 4 weeks.

^I dye my own so it's not a matter of cost.

WTF?? This is not something he should be getting pissed about. Whether or not you colour your hair (to hide grey or not) is completely your choice.

I use Color Wow. It is like an eyeshadow for your hair and you can get it at salons and beauty supply houses. It works really well and stays on until you wash it out.

Let me recommend a natural, brush-applied gray root touch up and rejuvenation system by BeauColour. Root Essentials is made from 100% all natural materials, and completely covers grey for those important days in between salon visits. Most importantly, Root Essentials contains anti-aging minerals and essential oils.

Extend expensive salon visits, or risky at-home treatments for weeks, even months.

Here is the website link;

Women all over the country as well as in various European countries love Root Essentials.

I use this - http://www.phyto-usa.com/needs/hair-type/gray-white-hair/phytargent.html

My mother, husband and daughter noticed how shiny and bright my hair was after one wash.

I've used that with good results too, but it like this product even better:

Once a month and I need it. Roots only for 25 mins. Then last 5 min I paint vertical stripes over the already dyed hair to refresh. I vary the pattern each month. This avoids getting overly dark tips and overly processed, damaged hair. As I wear my hair past my shoulders this matters more.

Many helpful tips here. Thank you.

Using a cream developer and cream color will lessen the mess in the bathroom. Getting a shower head with a hose and sprayer helps ALOT. You can just aim water where you need it. I now only do my hair with cool water.

I have used One N Only Argon oil color 4N from Sally Beauty for a few years (after using boxed Clarol Nice N Easy for 10 years, stopped as it was frying my hair to a crisp) but am looking to switch again. Some of my gray is going white and it resists that dye now. Researching Age Beautiful now. Also at Sally. Both even cheaper than drugstore box dye. I can mix only what I need. There are some good sales people at Sally's (but not all of them

I always put on a ton of moisturizer before I dye. Face around hairline, neck, chest and hands. Then the dye will just wipe off. Plus it's like a masque treatment and extra moisture. Hands can get very soft with extra lotion inside the gloves.

Ardell sells a product called Gray Magic. It's an additive to help cover resistant grays. Looks like soy sauce. I think it helps the dye stay better. At Sally's and Amazon.

Another thing that helps my color last longer is I only shampoo every two weeks. In between, I do a co-wash instead. Do everything like you're shampooing but just use small amount of conditioner instead of shampoo. I rinse well. Then I put a dab of conditioner on, work it through the ends mostly and do not rinse out. Locks in the moisture. That being said, I do have dry curly hair (and coloring makes it even more dry) so I do not get greasy until 2 weeks. I wash with shampoo then and I can see my hair dye fade right away. I go another 2 weeks and shampoo really good the day before I color again. I do not shampoo after coloring as the directions state. I only do a co-wash after I dye. And I let the dye oxidize for two days before I put anything else on my hair (products, sprays, heat defeat, etc.) That "dye smell" is your hair rebounding and oxidizing. Leave it alone for two days. This helps the color look more natural and last longer for me.

Every 4 to 6 weeks. I have medium brown hair and when the skunk stripe starts to get too noticeable I know it's time to get my of Garnier.

Coloring brown hair is easy to do yourself. I've been coloring my hair for maybe 5 years now and I have no idea how white it would be if I stopped coloring. I think it would be pretty white though. I'm 50.

I stopped coloring my hair. I now have streaks of white - not gray - throughout my hair.

If I colored again, however, which won't ever be the case, I'd never do it myself.

too risky

I color my hair roughly every six to 8 weeks sometimes longer. I have dark hair that grows fast, so use the root coverup stick that temporarily covers up greys. To minimize damage I use the semi permanent dye ( natural instincts med brown), which still is very drying. Are there safer, gentler option in semi permanent dyes?

Every 3-4 weeks. I color it at home with the Sally's professional product.

I have dark and short hair. I use the naturtint brand that is sold in whole foods, but I buy it in bulk online at less than 1/2 the price. I have a weekly helper/cleaner who comes to my house for a few hours(charges by the hour), and she colors and washes my hair in between cleaning my house. It barely takes minutes of her time and it is extremely convenient. I color every three weeks. My total cost is very low for the color as well as the labor. + I don't need an appointment, or to drive, or to clean the mess. The results are superb. I just calculated and my cost is around $11 for the color and the labor.

How do you do this for the roots all over your head? I can only manage the ones on top. I feel like the back of my head looks horrible. Thanks!

Every 3 wks for my roots. My hair is black and grows fast so I cannot get away with anything longer than that. I make the appointment with my very cool Japanese hairdresser when I am sitting in the chair. I have a short layered bob so this timeframe keeps it neat and trim.
