FCPS' plans to address concerns at under-enrolled and over-enrolled schools.

The old SB stuff is interesting--thanks for sharing.

As for Great Falls being sent back to Herndon from Langley, sure, anything is possible. But people have been saying that's going to happen for years, and it just isn't. Here's an old thread from 2013(!) talking about the possibility: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/45/314969.page

There are a lot of variables, and it isn’t going to happen anytime soon, if it ever happens. The two main things that have changed in recent years are that Herndon got a big expansion and a significant chunk of Tysons (about 30%) has now been reassigned to Langley.

With respect to the other recent comments, it would be very silly to entertain the idea of closing Great Falls Elementary.

I saw a forum questioning whether Armstrong and aldrin should consolidate

The question was why, given the current enrollments at Armstrong and Aldren, FCPS would expand Armstrong to 800 seats unless it intended to fold Aldrin into Armstrong.

The answer seemed to be that there was no indication FCPS had any such plans. Rather, FCPS simply expands schools regardless of the need when they are being renovated. And then, of course, they turn around and tell the schools that actually need expansions there is no money.

I think in the future 5-10) years GF will close and the kids will go to other near by schools.

There aren’t nearby schools compared to the proximity of elementary schools elsewhere in the county.

Doubt FCPS would close Great Falls Elementary. More likely for FCPS to play dominoes. Boundaries have been static for Langley elementary feeders since then except for minor changes. VDOE link for membership https://www.doe.virginia.gov/data-policy-funding/data-reports/statistics-reports/enrollment-demographics

SY 2004-05 less SY 2025-26
membership change post Colvin Run - grandfathering was for 6th in 2003.
Opened in 2003 with 31 6th graders who declined grandfathering- inc AAP/GT
JIP remained at GFES-no broad community consult-CRES admin + ex Spring Hill didn’t want it.
Churchill Rd has a modular near the end of the useful life.

Churchill Road Elementary (129)
Colvin Run Elementary (88)
Forestville Elementary (223)
Great Falls Elementary (126)
total (566)
Spring Hill Elementary 252

I like how they schedule it for a Friday night, hoping many won’t attend. Time to get ready for 6 months of arguing about which school gets stuck with Hagel Circle.

The Bren Mar Park to Lewis (or wherever) is also scheduled for a Friday - tomorrow.

The maps are up for Bren Mar Park and it looks like the proposal is to shift it to Key and Lewis. They will have to start 6th grade at BMP as they are currently a pre-K-5 school. Unclear how they plan to do this but BMP is under construction at the moment, so perhaps when the construction is done they will have room for a few more classrooms. This will take 344 students out of Edison and add them to Lewis.

As is usual the presentation materials are sloppy.

They claim the prior proposal to move BMP to Annandale would have created an attendance island at Holmes. That is false.

Then they state how many kids would move from Edison to Lewis but omit to state how many kids would move from Holmes to Key.

It also sucks that there is just one option. It should have been clear from the prior study people would have liked to see a proposal that kept the BMP kids west of 395 at Holmes but moved them to Annandale.

These people are so incredibly bad at their jobs. Clearly the only thing that enters their pea brains is moving kids to Key/Lewis and looking for the lowest hanging fruit.

I listened to the presentation today. The commenters and people attending at Bren Mar Park were not happy. It was pretty transparent that they were being targeted, and also pretty transparent that the goal was not just relieving capacity at Edison, but also filling up Lewis. One commenter correctly pointed out that if the capacity issue is with Edison, the solution should involve all of Edison. Not just the one school being targeted for removal. They were wondering why Franconia elementary wasn’t involved in this or why any of the West Springfield feeders weren’t being involved, so poking that hornets nest again. Some of the meeting attendees also pointed out that the commute from the Bren Mar Park area would involve driving on 395/95 or on Van Dorn right past Edison to get to Lewis.

This is a mess and the facilities guy presenting was unprepared. The answer to all the questions seemed to be “submit your feedback through the feedback form.” Also worth noting, the guy presenting and answering the questions today was Eric Gordon from facilities. However the “champion” for this project is the head of HR, a guy named Andrew Solomon.

Additionally I want to point out that they said that Nardos King 🤮 will be the “champion” for the Lorton issue.
