There will be no school all week - Here is why.

In my neighborhood there are millions of cars parked on both sides of the side streets. That made it hard for them to plow some of the streets properly. It’s annoying to have all those cars in the streets in normal conditions but this ice has made it even worse. That’s probably the case in many other streets too, across the county.

Short buses.

And pick up and drop off are in large parking lots.

And no private school is juggling walkers, bus riders strewn across 450 miles of Ffx Co., and the general 180k students including SN and handicapped.

So the private schools will continue on, and you’re just fine with that?

You get what you pay for.

Bus stop on my corner--middle school --is a mess.
And, FWIW, the owner is from a warm country and likely does not know that he is responsible for the sidewalk.

Fairfax County needs to do a better job of explaining that to residents. I think a lot of people do not realize the responsibility for the sidewalk.

Another concern: I remember a year when people were great about shoveling sidewalks. Then the snow melted, water stood up on sidewalks and we had a deep freeze. It was weeks before we could walk to school.

People just don’t care about shoveling the sidewalk. There is no penalty for not doing it and it’s a lot of work.

so how are things miraculously safer after 24 hours.. lol

Yep, very transparent to experienced FCPS parents.

The turns are right, unable to be used by a school bus. The bus stops are not cleared. I understand the reasons the school is not open. But, nothing is being done about it.

They could send out 15-20 plow trucks and clear the corners in neighborhoods, then spread additional sand in the neighborhoods. Fairfax County is 405 square miles so it's a large area. But, it's doable if they pushed for it. Look at it this way, this amount of snow and cold is normal for anyone living north of PA. I was born and raised here and had school in worse conditions than this. I lived in New England for ten years and having a foot of snow a week was nothing. It was just part of life. Everyone went to work. Schools were open.

The reasons they closed school on Monday have merit, but nothing is being done to remedy those issues. Therefore, how can we have school the rest of the week when temps don't even rise above 30 during the daytime and at night it's below 10 degrees.

You are an idiot and it is now confirmed.

No the idiot are the ones who think they had real cause to closes Monday and buy the "things have improved" story FCPS will not tell you.
Nothing has changed other the reality hitting them that kids can't stay home forever.

Our neighbor chose to shovel his driveway but not the sidewalk that houses the bus stop. It was a choice. It’s ok to acknowledge that some people are a%*holes.

THIS! There isnt a single house with the sidewalks not shoveled that also doesnt have a driveway shoveled. Not a single one.

Probably because those people need their driveway and don’t need their sidewalk. It’s not realistic to rely on residents for this. You can say how it should be all you want but it’s just not realistic.

I chose not to shovel my sidewalk and my neighbors did the same. Everyone is just walking on top of the snow without issue. We don't need sidewalks cleared.

What I also chose to do last night was submit a complaint with VDOT about the entrance to my neighborhood because there's no way a school bus could turn right without the merge lane being plowed. Right now the plow tracker shows a VDOT plow at that same spot I complained about.

We need to submit targeted complaints about the issues in our own neighborhoods so VDOT can prioritize it. There are a lot of plows in the southern part of the state right now and not very many in NOVA. Get online and tell them what's preventing the buses from getting into your respective neighborhoods.

Sidewalks get cleared - I'm not sure why you and neighbors are such A**holes, but this is how it works anywhere there is a winter storm in the rest of the country.

Things have changed, actually...another day with reduced traffic to clear snocrete piles, plus above freezing temps for a few hours to make clearing a whole lot easier. Tomorrow AM will be safer than this morning, though certainly still problematic.
