Is that not enough? How much Shakespeare do your think really needs to be done in a school year? |
Please stop. Taylor chose who he wanted for his reasons. Don’t try to make up reasons like institutional knowledge. There are other folks at Central Office and this didn’t happen in one day. There were transition periods for many of these. He is not be restrained by the BOE or MCPS entrenchment. He is making operational and political choices just like any leader. |
Appreciate your insight. I would question what defines success of the current plan. I agree that we don’t need to dive into the deepest end of the pool from the high dive, but we also don’t need to wade in like their babies. Jump in at the 4.5/5ft section and make them swim. If they start to sink, then offer them a life raft and some lessons. |

MCPS should have someone who likes literature and writing to be in charge of the k-12 curriculum. Reading this thread is really sad and appalling. |
I would be fine if kids actually read the play — but a) it’s an option, not a requirement and b) at some schools they say they do Shakespeare but the kids don’t read the play — they watch a movie version. I hope that even central office staff would admit that’s not acceptable, but there is zero oversight or accountability. |

And a good BTSN to you too! |
My middle schooler has a 1500 lexile on their MAP report. I don't my child to experience "success" in highschool in an extremely coddled, low-expectations environment that leaves him unprepared for college and life. |
Then, you need to go private. |
It's 21st century. We should all be texting with AI Mona Lisa, not reading stuffy books. https://www.talkie-ai.com/chat/mona-lisa-174904342413495 |
I'd expect 6-8 books a year. One Shakespeare is fine but when we got it in 9th, kids watched a video and were not given a copy of the book or the normal pdf version. We purchased it. There were two books, one audiobook (again, no physical copy) and one video for 9th. Now AP English and no books to date. |
Congrats on getting the opportunity to humble brag about your child. Im sure they are going to do just fine getting into the college of their choice regardless of having to have been forced to read a book below their level in 9th grade. |
Its me, the co-teacher again. We gave the students their choice of two alternate reading choices if they choose to opt out of The Magic Fish. They are A Separate Peace and When I Was Puerto Rican. 0 out of 75 students took the choice of the alternate book, but we did give them the weekend to discuss it with their parents. |
