He was standing at a podium. Started with a prepared statement, stood while a series of people kissed up to him for roughly a minute each, and then took a few softball questions.

I was surprised at how normal he sounded during the speaking portions. But his eyes kept drifting closed during the other speakers, and he grabbed each person by the arm and hauled them away from the mike like he was quietly desperate to get things over with as quickly as possible. (I’ve had some bad autoimmune attacks in the past, so I know how to recognize when someone is suffering while pretending to be functional.)

I had family in Florence and the local high school is fabulous- has so many overqualified trailing spouses teaching there but the southern culture of crassness, vulgarity and a thin veneer of showy good manners was still there in the student population. they eventually moved to Connecticut.
