China is more selective which countries in Africa and provides loans and aid for infrastructure and mining. Then these projects are required to use Chinese construction firms and companies to build. China has financed a major railroad line from Ethiopia to Djibouti so Ethiopia can export products easier to China

Why is this Americans issue if Ethiopians are going hungry? Their own corrupt Govt is responsible for it.

So it’s their fault for being born in an impoverished country with a corrupt government and must suffer their fate as a consequence?

Bad logic. The counterfactual to compare not to is what would have happened in absence of aid. There is a lot of evidence on that. It’s a great investment for US taxpayers; which is why it’s has strong bipartisan support for decades.

In 2023 there were around 9000 cases of Tb in the US. In 1993 there were 25,000. That's from the CDC.

The Cato Institute--that very non-liberal, very libertarian entity--looked at disease rates (reportable diseases other than Covid) and immigrant populations. More most reportable diseases the correlation was 0. For Tb there were a very small correlation with unlawful immigrant population--but this is not affecting Tb rates among native born and legal immigrants.

Violent crime has been decreasing since 1990.

Highest number of border encounters ever was in 1985.

It's strange how people can be inundated with the vision of things that aren't happening.

It's never too late. Yes, China has been working at this for some time. This is the story development professionals tell themselves, but is it really true? Has corruption really decreased in Africa? Most African heads of state aligned themselves with Russia in the Ukraine debacle. They are also playing Russia, China and the U.S. off of themselves to line their own pockets. There have been a spate of coups in the Sahel region over the past few years. Perhaps it's not working?

It’s not working, but to understand why you have to go back 20+ years and look at what happened during the Bush II administration. China went into Africa (and the Pacific and parts of Asia) hard in the 2000s while the U.S. was redirecting aid and diplomatic resources to Afghanistan and Iraq. American diplomacy - and the access of American companies to critical minerals - never really recovered from that.
