Not sure you should be generalizing from your (undoubtedly limited) experience. My DS took Calculus AB in 8th grade and BC in 9th. He's also done other advanced math classes (e.g., Linear Algebra) and practices calculus through math competitions. He's headed to Caltech.

I know someone who took calc freshman year. This kid loves math and aspires to be a quant someday. Kid also has other hobbies and is a happy kid. Goes to an HYP and tested out of undergrad math. Kid is happy and thriving.
