Seems like a silly way to keep alum engaged. They are asking smart people to waste their time and think their smart alum are too dumb not to realize their time is being wasted!?

Part of the reason I stopped interviewing.

Also, since everyone gets an interview, you get a lot of duds.

Yes, but don’t worry if you haven’t heard yet. Princeton tries to interview every applicant.

The Yale admissions office did a podcast specifically about interviews, you should listen. Basically, they offer interviews when they need more information on a candidate - because they are stuck and can’t decide one way or another or because they feel there is a hole in the application or even because they think an interest presented in the application might not be genuine (like the crafted narratives and passion projects).
