That’s way more effort than I would want to make as a high school kid just trying to grab a quick lunch.

We buy frozen meals at trader Joe's each weekend that my student brings for lunch. Minimal effort, way less than $20 (less than $10!), and plenty of classmate bonding.

Mmmkay 👍

I think it is really really impt that my 15 year old have a very high quality lunch. A sandwich from home? Are you kidding me? What is this - the 80s? when I reviewed the quality of the offerings at sidwell it seemed like just kinda regular cafeteria food. For that kind of money I expected much better. So we chose GDS so that we could make sure our DCs could have a lunch that is up to our standards as a family. That tends to mean door dashing from a range of places or sometimes I curate something from Whole Foods. If you truly care about your child’s lunch, you’ll need to upgrade from cafeteria food.

I love satire! 😂

That two diametrically opposed posters over the issue of these two private school lunch models have completely hijacked this 9-page thread is peak DCUM.

Not much difference between the two schools - both are full of nerds.

Sidwell lowers their admissions standards to recruit some athletes to entertain their nerds.

So does every Ivy+ (with the possible exception of MIT), so Sidwell is in good company. Sidwell students like to be entertained. 🤷

What do your conservative friends at the school think about that?

There are no conservatives at GDS.

+1. Walking 6 blocks, choosing a few items, standing in line to check out, walking back. I mean, you’ve taken up 30 minutes of time right there if not longer. Also, while foods options are expensive. Anything in the salad bar is $15+ at checkout.

Or just bring lunch.

I get this is a deal breaker for some. But no lunch doesn’t mean a kid eats out every day - I suppose those kids exist but none of the families I know I support daily take out lunch.

Also - lunch is 50 min. Longer if you have a free period on either end.

It's weird that people who don't go to GDS/don't like GDS have to make up an imaginary image of what lunch is like to justify their dislike. It's ok not to like GDS -- no school is for everyone -- but dislike it on the facts!

It’s a fact that GDS doesn’t have an US cafeteria. That’s one of the reasons I don’t like GDS for my children, but it’s not the only reason.

Thank God. School dodged a bullet there.

The poster denied that progressive dogma is being “thrust down [kids’] throats.” It’s really hard to see that when it’s your belief system. I would be much more willing to believe that the poster were there any number of conservatives or whatever who could objectively say it was not. The problem with groupthink is that it’s really hard to see it from the inside.

Sidwell has a well deserved reputation. GDS is overhyped and not deserving of this ridiculous “big 3” label, probably not even “big 5”. It’s a good school but it’s not worthy of all the hype.
