Criteria: prestige, merit, matriculation, tradition, rivalries, notability, alums, etc.

1. Sidwell
2. NCS and STA
3. GDS
4. Maret
5. Potomac
6. Holton and Landon
7. Bullis
8. Maderia
9. WIS
10. SR and GP
11. SJC
12. Episcopal
13. St Andrews
14. St Stephens St Agnes
15. Visi and Gonzaga

This list is so wrong. Girls and boys schools are not equal in any way just because they have a relationship of some sort. This list is better.

1. STA
2. NCS
3. Sidwell
4. GDS
5. Potomac
6. Maret
7. Holton
8. Bullis
9. Landon
10. Gonzaga
11. St. Johns
12. Prep
13. St. Anselms
14. Madeira
15. St. Steven St. Agnes

This is the best one so far.
I think Potomac over Maret is correct. Maret has slipped the past few years. I might put Holton over Maret as well.

Considering ALL factors PP, not even an STA/NCS parent would put themselves above Sidwell. Here is the better list with an additional college matriculation factor:

1. Sidwell
2. GDS
3. NCS
4. Potomac
5. STA
6. Holton
7. Maret
8. Bullis
9. Madeira
10. Landon
11. St Andrews
12. Stone Ridge
13. SJC
14. Prep
15. Visi
Notice how there is no BIM or St. Anselms.

Sidwell is all hype. Had a kid there and STA and it’s not even close, STA is the better place. Younger kid eventually transferred to STA and still remarks how STA is both harder academically and more fun than Sidwell.

I don’t know about that. All of the parents I know that have had kids at both schools prefer STA hands down.

Gonzaga is not elite, both Gonzaga and St John’s are like public private schools. Lots of average graduates. Gonzaga is not academically on par with schools like St. Andrews.

It’s more like there are groupings and some room for reshuffling within each group.

1-4. NCS/STA/Sidwell/GDS
5-9. Holton/Madeira/Potomac/Maret/St. Anselms
10-13. Visi/SR/Prep/Landon
14-17. Gonzaga/SJC/SAES/Bullis

Laugh if you want but Good Counsel has the happiest, most well rounded kids and a long wait list.

SSAS and Bullis just should not be on this list. You people are delusional.

STA is not sought after enough or selective enough anymore to be considered top tier. Even the poster who accidently listed them 'first' admitted it was an error. STA still a solid school and great option for all boys, non-Catholic experience. Landon has closed gap significantly.

“All of the parents you know” aren’t a scientific sample. I know a family whose son transferred from STA to Sidwell, and he always says he’s much happier at Sidwell. Neither of our anecdotes are universal. People need to find the best fit for their children.

Everyone gets into Landon. They took the very bottom student from our K-8.

GC has a long wait list because it's an affordable option, is large, and has lower admissions standards than most prep schools.

The waitlist for GC is long because it's a backup for people who don't want their kids to go to their lower-ranked MCPS zoned school (eg, anything besides W schools, BCC, QO, etc) and their kid didn't get into a magnet program, Catholic kids who didn't make the cut for Prep/Visi/etc, and Catholic kids who wanted co-ed and either didn't get in or didn't want to commute to SJC.

Class sizes are huge and it doesn't offer anything more than a high-SES public school has. Outside of devout Catholics, no one's paying for GC and commuting out to Olney if they live in bounds for Whitman, Churchill, etc. Same can't be said for Sidwell, GDS, STA/NCS, Prep, etc.

It's not a bad school by any stretch of the imagination, but it's nowhere near T15 status.

We are zoned for Whitman (MCPS “W” or whatever people say) got into SJC as well, but chose Good Counsel because my DC liked the vibe and we thought it was a good fit.

We value the religious background and not into high status or aiming Ivy leagues… simply want my DC to be in a safer environment, have cohorts and spend a well balanced 4 years of high school.
