Sorry - that's too inconvenient for me as a parent.

Advisory is the bane of my existence. I'm at one of the schools that does daily advisory. Waste of everyone's time. MD law states students must be in school 6 hours a day. Currently, MS and HS are in school for longer (6 hrs and 45 for HS and 7 for middle school) eliminate advisory. Give the students more time to sleep as most parents are already advocating for that as it is.

Make-work time…pointless fad.

Advisory time happens because people insist our public schools need to make time for social-emotional learning, even though most of MCPS’s teachers are not trained or qualified to deliver that kind of material. Plus, the curriculum for most SEL is garbage so the kids check out and it wastes everyone’s time.

So true - garbage SEL, teachers don't need more to learn to advise on topics outside their subjects. No one cares! Get rid of it or hold it a few times a quarter as necessary.

Hi, taught for a year and said eff that.

(1) I make ~2-3x working as a tutor as I would working as a teacher. Could probably push raise to make it as much as 5x to be honest.

(2) The constant need to track students down to make them take tests (I worked at a private school) was awful as the students learned no personal accountability.

If more students could put a little more effort at home. for example, with reading if older siblings could read with younger ones (cuz parents are often busy surviving with other duties).

Advisory is such a joke. I click and read through some awful slide show someone with an office made while kids argue with me. This alternates between daily study hall where I get to spend the whole 25 minutes tracking down missing kids or arguing with the kids that are just making excuses to get out of the room

One teacher at our school hid from students to cry at advisory. At least school could have provided the teacher a private area to do so if they even knew. Sad hearing about it.

Agreed. Advisory is the only time in my entire career I've felt like an actual babysitter. 45 minutes a day. The kids are miserable. The adults are miserable. MCPS needs to do away with it, but of course, they don't actually listen to people in buildings, so it'll be here forever.

Please teachers or your union, start movement to rid of advisory or reduce to once a week at most. Please and thank you.
