I grew up near the beach and I remember seeing plenty of kids playing in holes as a kid. And 100%, my boys would have jumped in a hole of any size when they were little if we had let them. I was an engineering major, so I knew about the dynamics of sand, but I also don’t remember hearing stories in the news about sand collapse when my kids were little. I do remember reading a story about a grain silo death. Not sure how old your kids are, but even 10-15 years ago, news didn’t “go viral” with the same intensity that it does today. There were still kids dying from collapsed holes on the beach, but they didn’t get circulated as much. I live in a ski town, and I didn’t learn about tree wells until I moved here. It’s not so much an east coast thing as a west coast thing, and I had never seen a news story about them. Hopefully these tragedies will make this danger more well known. Every year I read a story about a child who dies sledding on a ski hill. It has happened at least a few times in my town. Don’t let your kids sled on ski runs, no matter how gentle the slope looks. Google the Doering case at copper for a horrific example. |
Ok but in that case the mom borrowed a sled from the ski daycare saying she was going to pull her kids around the village, but took them to a closed trail after hours where the kids slammed into the back of a snowplow, that was grooming slopes at 30 mph. Idiot. |
Sledding on ski runs is never allowed. I see parents all the time letting their kids sled at the bottom of runs. Or out of ski in ski out homes midslope. Then they hit the lift tower. |
I just read about this case. They sued Cooper mountai, saying there should have been warnings about snowplow. But I think they gave up? |
Only about 4 feet. |

The parents have given an interview:
Distraught parents of 7-year-old girl who suffocated in collapsed sand hole on beach say danger 'never crossed their mind' and claim they are known as 'overprotective' among their friends https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13194937/Distraught-parents-7-year-old-girl-suffocated-collapsed-sand-hole-beach-say-danger-never-crossed-mind-claim-known-overprotective-friends.html |
That’s a lot of sand, my kid is lucky if he has 6 inches of sand. |
They typically do. I've seen signs telling people to fill in all holes bc of sea turtles and to keep other people from falling in them and getting injured. But most people don't read signs, ignore them and often think the rules don't apply to them. Quite frankly I think it's rude and selfish to sit there as a parent and let your kids dig large holes at a beach. You wouldn't do that at a local park, so what makes ppl think it's ok to do at a beach?? I don't get it. |
From the article: "Those who died include a 17-year-old boy who was buried at a North Carolina beach last year, a 13-year-old who was digging into a sand dune at a state park in Utah and an 18-year-old who was digging with his sister at a New Jersey beach. Those two accidents happened in 2022." Let these be cautionary tales. |
| Scary. We have so many pics of my kids in giant holes. I knew to fill them in so people and animals didn’t trip. But I won’t let them do it anymore. |
I’ve never known a sandbox to be that deep even as a 1970s child. Was it homemade? |
