Tysons or Bethesda

Normandie Farm (in Potomac) when it reopens will go into the plus column for Bethesda, but it is still closed for renovations. Tysons lost its Evan’s Farm Inn, once a popular restaurant and working farm for families to enjoy. But there is still the historic Colvin Run Mill near Tysons which has weekly events for families, and sometimes the delicious johnny cakes for a fun breakfast.

In terms of cultural spaces I’d say it’s a draw between Tyson’s Wolf Trap and Capital One Hall vs Bethesda’s Strathmore Hall.

Tysons has the historic Washington Golf and Country Club with popular swim team in nearby N Arlington near McLean while Bethesda has Congressional and Kenwood.

While there is no family friendly Bethesda Row in Tysons, the Boro is a new walkable neighborhood with shops and cafes. The Mosaic in Merrifield, and The Crossing in Clarendon are both Bethesda Row like neighborhoods with Apple stores, Barnes and Nobles and Lululemons a very short drive or Metro ride away.

Tysons is also closer to Front Royal for fun family hiking excursions to Skyline Drive.

So in terms of places for families, Tysons wins by a hair due to the higher number of family friendly options in proximity.

Rockville’s pike and rose is family, dog and green space friendly. Movie theater, outdoor restaurants, farmers market, upscale shopping, dog park with drinks, and green play space. Bethesda also has the capital crescent trial and tons of bike trails. Hikes galore. Plenty of family friendly options.

When is MD going to man up and expand the highway to ease traffic??

Maybe your southern people should take your white hoods off and realize VA is the traffic issue

Governor Hogan had exciting plans to expand the Beltway on the Maryland side, but he was blocked. I doubt it will ever happen. Maybe a new light rail line there across the river would be nice alternative.

As a black guy, I feel way less comfortable in your hood versus VA. You guys STILL attend and put on a pedestal country clubs with some of the most vile history (You guys lovingly refer to it as “Chevy” on here), and people in Bethesda / Chevy Chase are just all around mean to black people. Maybe Virginians are fake but i feel way less racism over there.

This says a lot. Wake up MD!!

Tysons hands down. You will end up paying a lot more in Bethesda with crazy county income tax. It is 3.25% so take that out from your salary and now figure out the rent. Doesn't make sense at all.

These threads always get so nasty - I really don’t get it. In everyday life, no one thinks like this about Virginia or Maryland - you just live where you live.

I think every newcomer without ties to the area has this dilemma. We picked Virginia (McLean) for easy access to downtown via gw pkwy, easy access to airports, lower taxes, and superior public universities. We specifically picked fairfax county for schools, but went private.

Also, comparing downtown to Bethesda to Tyson’s is really dumb (not directed at you, OP). She can live in Vienna or something and be close to her job and have the vibe she’s looking for. Pick a state and then narrow it down from there.

Hopefully never. All that does is invite more cars. Walk, bike or take public transportation. Hate, hate cars & highways.

Don’t you have to live in Va for a minimum number of years first to qualify for in state tuition?

we gross 800k and the 20-30k I would save in taxes is immaterial. I gladly pay more to live in Bethesda. It's not all about taxes. If it were, the northeast would be a landfill..but it's still the epicenter of business/wealth in the US.

Bethesda is no more the northeast than Tysons. Washington DC is what gives this area its wealth.

I gross more than 800K, and VA's lower taxes are a significant factor both in our choosing VA over MD originally and in keeping us here.
