You should go back out to play and let the grownups help this discussion. Btw, the term you used is a derogatory term that you’re using. I’m not sure if you’re aware of that |
Wasn't the spike in flu and rsv because kids' who haven't been sick in several years are giving their immune systems a workout? Once you do unmask prepare for a boomerang |
Whenever I see these kinds of anecdotal details I have to wonder how the hell the original poster knows so much information about the kids in their child's class and they're masking habits and when they're out with covid. Is the class listserv just popping off? Do you regularly visit class to keep tabs on which kids are wearing masks and which ones are not? |
1. Maybe, but once food is involved it's pointless.
2. No, I wouldn't be offended |
The flu and colds come in full force every year. We aren't constantly sick as we mask and kids are still in virtual school. When in person pre-covid we were constantly sick. |
Eating and drinking are like 15-20 minutes of the party. That’s insane to skip the party; clearly your kid isn’t still masking because your answer is nonsensical. |
Per our pediatric immunologist, who says you are dead wrong: The viruses were more aggressive because they had been stamped down. But kids’ immune systems were not weaker from masking. Those are different things, and the former is irrelevant to an individual decision whether to mask. |
This is incredibly sad. |
Not sad but this person has a mental illness |
At this point I’d assume any child still masking will mask for the rest of their lives. I do not want to socialize or spend a significant amount of time with someone masking. I would not include them. I realize that these people will say they have immune compromised family members but the truth is I never once came across a masked person pre-Covid. These same people lived perfectly normal lives pre-Covid. Now all of a sudden they feel the need to mask forever. |
Why are your kids still in virtual school? |
It seems like you misinterpreted something your immunologist said. There is no evidence that viruses are “more aggressive.” There is less immunity at the population level because of missed infections over the last couple of years. Infants didn’t get maternal antibodies from their moms like they usually do. We are often asymptomatically infected with things in a normal year, but many of those infections were missed and neutralizing Abs dropped. When your kids take off their masks, they will have a resurgence in illness due to missed illnesses. That doesn’t mean their immune systems are weakened or damaged, but they need to be boosted with exposure. |
+1. There’s a reason there’s a saying about your kid either getting sick in daycare or Kindergarten. These kids haven’t been exposed to a lot of stuff. Not because their immmne systems are weaker but because they need to build immunity thru exposure. This didn’t use to be controversial but now forever maskers are twisting themselves in knots to make some kind of distinction. Btw I think the lack of exposure was due to isolation and less travel more than masking. |
I guess you’ve never seen an Asian before then |
I went to a college with a large Asian population, worked at a large bank in NYC and traveled frequently between NY and LA. I truly never came across people, including Asians, wearing masks. My husband went to a Chinese prep school as a kid and he does not remember anyone wearing a mask. If I google street photos of Tokyo in 2018, I do not see people wearing masks. |
