So - my kid was in 5th with the “kick ass lady” (kid is currently in 8th) and I don’t remember anything in particular about that reign. I have, however, been very impressed with the “new” (almost 3 years now) HOS and his seemingly tireless energy; he appears to be working his ass off to run the school. Virtual Town halls are frequent, transparent, and very informative, and the sheer number of activities (cookouts, spirit weeks, etc) has gone way up - many, many opportunities to get involved in the basis community. Yes, he runs a tight ship (probably given his relative youth he feels he has to set the tone/rules right out of the gate), but from my (outsider/parent) perspective he seems to be doing a fantastic job.

Those are middle school parents talking. Many high school parents preferred the way the previous head did business. She was a good manager, not nearly as controlling. She'd encourage parents and kids with offbeat ideas, backgrounds and interests, and was much more of an intellectual. College advising was better under her, she knew and cared much more about elite college admissions. We tolerate this sports minded cheerleader guy.

Hold it - so the old criticism of the school was that there was too much of a pressure cooker atmosphere, with bad facilities and little non-academic extracurriculars. The current HOS has been there from the very beginning or close to it (started as a teacher) and heard all this criticism and has pushed to change the culture. And NOW you don't like that there are more activities and sports?

And btw, the college counseling has never been all that, before or currently. Take your $$ and get private help - cheaper than private school tuition.

Can't win!!

Are you open to insight or just bent on telling us how to think about the HOS? IME, the former HOS was much more open to initiative. She'd knock herself out to help kids get credit for outside activities, e.g. to incorporate independent research into the curriculum. If you went to her and said, I'd like my kid to opt out of beginning Spanish in 8th grade because he's already fluent, she'd listen and talk through your proposals for alternatives. If you said you wanted your kid to take an AP test in a subject not taught at BASIS or to apply to universities abroad, she'd get the ball rolling on admins and teachers helping you. Some of us don't like this guy's tunnel vision. We think he's full of himself with a tin ear. Yes, there are more sports and clubs and such now. Thing is, most of the activities he's generated are there to serve middle school students vs. high school students aiming high in college admissions.

PP got it right. Does anyone really not think he is full of himself with a tin ear? Also, all the rah rah rah is for middle school kids. The high school students do not care about things like Wacky Tacky Monday. Moreover, they are pretty upset that the HOS has passed down the message that homecoming will be cancelled if they don't participate enough in those types of activities. He is not making friends.

Why does he send the texts about it? Just to inspire ridicule at every house?

Lol

Not PP but sounds like you should take your own advice.

“Iconic Tuesday”. Is anyone thinking there is actual value to this spam? Is it possible to opt out and still get important school news?

Wait … what? Can you post that communication? We have not seen that.

Because he's a 20-something ass who didn't graduate from a top college or grad school, like the rest of his team. Without Arizona HQ, his crew would be even more ridiculous. Great kids and some fine teachers are what makes BASIS, not the admins.

I wish the text reminders weren’t sent so early in the morning

MS parent here. I like getting reminders in the morning. Exactly the kind of hand holding I need.
