That sounds like a very rare incident. In this case it was not that unusual. |

When I was a kid in Philadelphia, someone at my church got shot during a carjacking gone wrong. The dad wouldn’t get out of the car because his baby was in the back seat.
No thanks. I like my kids safe and sheltered. |

And I also remember seeing crack viles and not knowing what they were.
I used to walk to school (~7 city blocks) to elementary. I have a clear memory of a cyclist getting hit by a bus. |
We moved from Alexandria to McLean. I would hear rumors and occasionally news about MS13 killings. |
I agree with all this. |
| City kids learn not to say "Candyman" three times in front of the mirror. Suburban kids learn not to fall asleep on Elm Street. |

I didn't grow up in the city but knew someone who did.
She casually showed me the bus stop. where some woman got raped. It wasn't exactly late at night but it was dark. Her classmates mother got raped. That really shocked her and her mom. They were not wealthy, so I do not know if having a lot of money could have shielded them from that reality. She did carry pepper spray wherever she went, avoided certain roads, stayed home certain hours. I think the stress affected her school performance. The high school was not that highly regarded either |

All my husbands cousins are city people raising their kids in the city (split between San Francisco and New York City). They are all very privileged, they had second vacation homes in New England to which they could escape during covid. The cousins kids all go to private schools. The older kids get to take gap years after high school, supported by their parents of course, to focus on passion projects and travel, before they go off to their respective Ivy League universities. They are also super ‘woke’ liberal, which is something for me to say because I’m pretty liberal, but these people take it to a whole new level.
Cities are made up primarily of wealthy whites and poor blacks. And they don’t mix for the most part other than on the subway. |
The wealthy are a small minority |
