Checking baggage pet peeve

Anonymous
Sometimes when I check a bag, they put the tag on the retractable handle of the suitcase, instead of the actual handle. Why don't they train them not to do this? It's obviously not ideal as it gets in the way of retracting the handle, plus is annoying when you are walking with the suitcase. I always hand over my bag with the retractable handle stored, but I've actually watched someone pull it back out to attach the tag, even though the attached handle is *right there.*

Thank you for reading my petty travel complaint!

Never had this happen and I travel a lot. When you present the bag, is the handle already retracted into the suitcase?

Why don't you tag it yourself? Most airlines have gone to the self-print kiosks.

Can’t remember the last time I wasn’t the one putting my bag tag on but also have never had them do this (and can’t see why it would matter?)

This is so annoying, though! Why am I doing the job of the airline? Particularly because there’s usually an employee standing next to me, watching and instructing in the right way to do it. Why doesn’t that employee just do it?

The airline check-in kiosks are like the self-check out at the grocery stores.
Yes.come to terms that you're "doing the job of the airline" .
BUT the role has changed. The airline folks stand around to assist nit do the actually tagging for you.

Just remove it once you've reached your destination and have claimed it from the baggage claim carousel.

Since it's checked-on, youre not lugging your suitcase via the retractable handle, around anywhere until you're at your destination in which case you can remove it.

You're in for a big surprise when you encounter the self-serve check out at grocery stores then!

My bag has zippered fabric over the retractable handle. Can you look for one of those next time?

I don't quite see how that would pose such a problem that you're writing about it. I mean, you can still hold the handle, and still push it back in most of the way, no?

But yes, ideally, no one should be messing with retractable handles.

+1. I check a bag roundtrip every other month or so. This has never happened to me. Most airlines now give you the option to get your own tags at the kiosk and then just drop the bags off.

If I am going on a trip would require me to check a bag, I ship via FedEx or UPS.

NP. It has definitely happened to me, and I get why OP finds it annoying.
