Knee issue

I know I should see a doctor but instead I'm here so it is what it is. I have been having I think some overuse issues with my knees. We had a ski trip at the end of February and on the VERY last run I felt something 'not quite right' in my knee. I rested it for a week or so and then did less aggressive workouts for a bit and after 4-6 weeks it seemed fine and back to normal.

Last Tuesday I did a strength workout for the first time since that. Lateral lunges and squats primarily on the legs front. The next day I was (expected) sore and rested but the FOLLOWING day I realized there was something REALLY off with my right knee. I was unable to crouch. I don't know how else to describe it but my leg just did not want to be bent. If I started to bend it without weight on it it would just feel strained/wrong and if I tried to bend it with weight (ie crouch) it would almost seize up and I would be quickly compelled to remove weight/straighten the leg. It seemed also almost swollen. But swollen on the inside? Hard to explain like not visually swollen but FELT swollen.

We are one week out and I have been doing some walking but nothing else and it is still just weird. I did pretty heavy walks on Wed/Thurs trying to work through what I thought was just soreness and then did nothing at all Fri/Sat. On Saturday when my knee started clicking when I walked down the stairs or crouched. On Sunday we went to Ikea so it wasn't like powerwalking but a lot of time walking. Yesterday again really did nothing at all. And the walking has seemed to aggravate it a bit (ie, it was a lot worse yesterday after ikea than it is today after resting).

Anyway, today it is like, clearly improving. The clicking has stopped, it is able to bear a lot more weight although not for anywhere near a normal amount of time but I can now like, squat down to get something out of my lazy susan without having to fully extend. My question is if you have had something like this what the heck was going on? Could this be the skiing injury and I just should have held off on strength training for more time? Should I stick to peloton/less load bearing exercises? Should I really just straight up do nothing but rest for another week? It is hard for me to do literally nothing but I don't want to screw my knee up forever (I'm 39 and have not had knee issues historically). It all seems like it would be overdramatic to go to the doctor or PT. I can walk, it has not been particularly painful at all. Even when it was not bearing weight it wasn't HURTING it was just more like it was giving out/not wanting to bear any weight.

It would not be over dramatic to go see a sports doctor at all. That’s what they are there for. You get one pair of knees.

Definitely go to the doctor.

I skimmed your post so forgive me if you mentioned this but have you tried wearing a brace?

You need to see an orthopedist though. You might have torn something or its just inflamed and the doc may be able to drain excess fluid to give you relief.

Will prob prescrip PT. A pain (no pun intended) but can actually be really helpful. If you ignore this, you will end up favoring your knee and end up injuring something else. Ask me how I know.

Go to an orthopedist for sure. It could be any number of things -- injury, arthritis, etc. You won't know until you go to the doctor.
