Grades at TJ

DS got accepted - Trying to decide if he should choose TJ or base school. He has been a straight A student up until now, but the general feedback we have from friends is to not go ahead with TJ. How common / uncommon are straight As in TJ. What kind of grades are we looking at for a top 20% student at TJ?

Why did he apply? If a B would be worse than that reason, then there's your answer.

I have a freshman at TJ. He is doing well there and enjoys the school and the unique opportunities it provides. When deciding, we told him not to consider college outcomes. Who really knows if your kid would be better or worse off going to TJ. The reason to go is for the challenge, the peer group, and the notion that, by the time you get to college, you will be well prepared.

If ur kid is not going to be in the too half at TJ - do not send to TJ. And no - grades till middle school are not a predictor.

What are the grades of a TJ kids in say top 25%? All A grades,or any B/C allowed?

It's not until sophomore year that the real struggle begins, but by then, the student is firmly trapped in the TJ social image perception and unlikely to return to the base school. No easy DE courses available for TJ students.

There is no practical support structure for TJ kids who suffer with bad grades. The TJ counselors and mental health people put it back on the student saying dont worry about grades, a few Cs is not the end of the world, may be it's time management issue, etc.

Math is the toughest course category at TJ. Math should become second nature, or else it consumes a significant portion of the limited and precious daily homework time. This puts pressure on the allocation of study time for other equally demanding subjects - sciences, language, social studies, etc. However, if a student efficiently manages math, then the others receive their due attention, and maintaining daily discipline with time management becomes the key.

PP never said otherwise. They just advised against OP letting their child be one of those 225.
