We did not come back home until it had been on for 12 hours already, so I don't know how warm the fridge/freezer got. Everything seemed fine when we got home - nothing smelled bad. The ice was a little stuck together, so it must have melted a bit and refroze. The popsicles were slightly misshapen. Should I just throw everything out?
Ketchup and mustard should be ok, but I'd toss just about everything else. We had to do this too. The upside, I totally cleaned the refridge and freezer- it's sparkling!
Depends - we didn't open our freezer door except to throw in dry ice. Our ice and meats were still rock solid frozen. Some of the ice cream and frozen dinners got soft - we tossed that.
I wouldn't throw out freezer stuff. A half full freezer stays good for 24 hours, a filled one for 48. I would toss a lot of the fridge contents though.
I'd toss it. Especially since it's possible that things began to defrost and then re-froze when the power came back on.
take a picture of your fridge/freezer stuff...you might be able to recoup from your insurance company if it's a total loss. Check your policy and you might be able to get a few hundred dollars.

Honestly, I would only toss raw seafood, meat, and milk and probably the ice cream. Everything else that smelled fine I would eat.
Depends. If you did not open freezer for 24 hours and food is still frozen, it should be ok. Otherwise, it isn't worth risk and I would throw it out--don't give it to dog because it can get sick, too. The same is true with refrigerator if it hasn't been opened for 24 hours after elec. went out. Otherwise, throw out just about everything, even ketchup and mustard if they are opened. |
