Shepard Park

Considering a potential move...would love to hear feedback? Seeking a friendly, diverse community for our Jewish LGBTQ family raising kids of color. Had originally been looking at Takoma Park but now interested in SP. Thanks!

Why did you rule TP out?

Definitely SP. Better community vibe than TKPK, better schools (feed to JR), less crime, and DC’s Jewish neighborhood. Hard part is finding a house with such limited housing stock.

Nothing available! Came across a few possibilities in SP and now starting to seriously explore the area a bit. We still love TP, too!!!

Shepard Park is lovely. Relatively small turnover though. But also with your description I'd really recommend 20910 silver spring as well.

+1 for 20910

Capitol View Park and Forest Glen neighborhoods.

The only neighborhood in MD that I feel is TPish is North Woodside in 20910. Lots of bungalows, iiberal folks.

The other 20910 neighborhoods are like TP in terms of being welcoming to OP's family, but without the bungalow aesthetic. Housing stock is pretty tight though.

East Silver Spring in 20910 is also a good place to look. It directly borders Takoma Park and extends to the other side of Sligo Avenue to Bullis Park. Lots of bungalows and craftsman style homes. The houses north of Sligo Ave are generally larger and have bigger lots.

I know a few families like yours in SP and they seem happy with the neighborhood, though the elementary school was a bit traditional for some of their tastes. OOB DCPS, charter, or private school (Milton is an easy commute) are also options.

What do you mean by Shepherd Elementary being “a bit traditional”? As someone also hoping to move there, I’m genuinely curious!

Dividing kids by gender was the big thing I remember, but nothing terrible!

LGBTQ family here, raising a kid of color. We moved to Shepherd Park last year and are thrilled to be in the neighborhood. Quite diverse, and very walkable to Rock Creek Park, Whole Foods (Parks at Walter Reed development), Shepherd Elementary (where we plan to enroll for fall 2025), and the local DC library branch. We previously lived closer to downtown, so I was a bit hesitant to be further out. But it’s actually very convenient to so much of the city, plus Silver Spring, Takoma Park, and even Bethesda.

Shepherd park is a lovely neighborhood but it has differences depending on if you’re closer to 16th vs Georgia. I for one would want to be a few streets back from Georgia Ave.
