TJ allocated vs. unallocated split

Anonymous
What percent of total 550 seats of admitted class are filled under allocated quota? how many are offered from the unallocated pool? Does each participating county also follow the 1.5% allocation method for its schools? Is there a set share of seats per county? It appears more than half of the admitted are from FCPS.

This appears to be an interim document while merit lottery was one of options being considered. But has interesting facts.

Is there another document or description that answer OP's questions?

We'll find out on Friday. You can wait that long.

Individual offer decisions come out on Friday. The question was related to how the overall seat allocation is done.

Document does not mention how the 1.5% works?

Per page 19, 100 FCPS students with the highest combined GPA, portrait + math essays and experience factor get accepted. The remaining 450 are picked through a lottery system. Lottery caps:

Region 1: 66 (Carson, Cooper, Thoreau, Herndon, Hughes)
Region 2: 69 (Longfellow, Glasgow, Luther Jackson)
Region 3: 60 (Twain, Sandburg, Whitman)
Region 4: 65 (Lake Braddock, Robinson, South County, Irving)
Region 5: 55 (Kilmer, Frost, Rocky Run, Katherine Johnson, Franklin, Stone)
Arlington: 16
Falls Church: 2
Loudoun: 55
Prince William: 62

The way GPA is calculated:

Does that mean scoring 100 and 93 in a subject make no difference?

It seems unfair that Region 5 with 6 schools gets only 55 seats whereas Region 2 is assigned 69.

From last year's admissions data, it's also baffling that such a small school as Rocky Run sends many more students to TJ than bigger MS in the same or other regions.

It's not a lottery. This document is not the current admissions process.

How exactly is the current process?

It is not size of the school, it's what they teach there. My school has 3/4th failing in algebra 1 in 8th grade, but instead of fixing our base school they only want to talk about how they can send a couple to TJ for sure. Cant blame the teachers either, as chronic attendance is an issue that's never been addressed. Our old neighbor moved to Rocky Run area last year.

The process is too vague as listed on admissions website. Why is not documented anywhere?

They choose the top 1.5% of each middle school according to size, and then an additional overall top 100 students from any school. It's not a lottery.

The board docs posted know are old, it still likely close numbers that about 155 kids from London, falls church, prince william and Arlington- so outside of FCPS. Is TJ not actually a FCPS school? Is it a Virginia school and not FCPS? Otherwise don’t follow why so many spots for non FCPS kids.
