The NYT has an article on people whose eyes were permanently injured from looking directly at the sun.

The difference is that when the sun is unobstructed, if you look toward the sun your natural instinct is to avert your eyes, because it is so bright.

During an eclipse, it's darker, the sun appears less bright, and that visceral reaction disappears or is lessened. You are tempted to look, and to look for longer. But it can still be very damaging to your eyes.

The more you know.
