| Anyone have experience with a high school that actually monitors phone use in school time? Where kids aren't on their phones during lunch, on the bus, outings, etc and are actually interacting with one another? DC is in private k-8 MS now and kids are GLUED to their phones. Not as much during class because they are not allowed, but it's youtube and the likes on their chromebooks in some classes. |
| Religious schools might be your best bet. Many of the private schools are as worse as the public schools when it comes to screen time. |
Our religious school has a no phones out policy for the entire school day. |
So does ours. Parents are called if a HS student is caught with their phone out. |
Which school is this? Thanks |
| Georgetown Visitation does |
| Our school has restrictions on using them as phones (ie, making phone calls) in certain open spaces like hallways, but otherwise no limits outside of class. No phones in class unless specifically instructed to use them by a teacher (like to record certain activities or access a supplemental app—happens rarely). |
| Could people please name the school if you give an example of a strict or lenient phone policy? I understand why people are hesitant to give specifics where there could be identifying information, but especially in the case of the 12:09 post, you could substitute a schools name in for "Our school" and I would not be able to figure out who your child is. |
That’s really surprising. There was a thread on this not too long ago and it seemed like all the k-8s were really strict on phone use. My kids are at WES and it’s phones in lockers all day and my understanding is that it is strictly enforced. They even made the kids turn in their phones at the school dance. most high schools seemed to permit it in free periods, though, which is too bad. I’d also appreciate people mentioning schools by name. |
We have a very strict HS phone policy (I posted above) but it’s also a conservative, religious school that I assume will tank this thread. Are you open to a conservative, religious (not catholic) school? |
| Sidwell has a strict phone policy. |
| Bullis has a strict policy as of this year. |
| Landon allows no phone usage during the school day. They have to be turned off and in the locker until dismissal. |
| Phones are a scourge. There should be strict policies through high school, with the exception of coordinating with a parent at the beginning and end of the day, or other times with explicit permission. The additional resources needed to enforce this would be well-spent. |
| My DC’s school doesn’t allow phones out during class, but they can have them out during lunch. The problem is that the kids are on their MacBooks during class to take notes, which are also connected to everything their phones are connected to: iMessages, the internet, social media apps, etc. However, some teachers at my DC’s school do not even allow a laptop out during class and require all notes to be handwritten unless you have an accomodation. |
