High art class can you switch into now for second quarter?

Anonymous
Hello! What happens if a child withdraws in the second quarter of the second semester ( as in next week) and switches to something like stage design or ceramics or something where there would perhaps be flexibility upon entering? Is it possible to switch into a course the second quarter of second semester if you want to drop a very difficult course that is making it harder to get good grades in the rest of your classes, and of course one not needed for graduation? The child is a junior and miserable. They would get a W on the transcript right? But nothing else?

No, they can switch into study hall or something, but you can't pick up a class in the middle of the semester.

Incorrect. You can change courses provided that the quarters are independent of each other. Check with your counselor. Your student could also consider a PE class like yoga for the brain break.

So rude you think there would be flexibility in ANY class at the half way point. What’s your bias against arts classes? Are you assuming they aren’t learning any skills that build on each other? As a teacher I can’t stand getting kids joining late just because they were bored in another class. The kids I’ve been teaching since the start of the class get super pissed that I have to slow down instruction or repeat instruction just because of your kid joining late.

What courses have quarters that are independent of each other? Does MCPS offer any 1/4 credit classes?

In middle school yes, but not in high school

Only thought that way because some classes are more independent in nature and that was why I was asking if any might work. I’m an artist btw. Not anything against art in particular.

So it is impossible to join a yoga pe class for last quarter?

Right, but OP's kid isn't a junior in middle school.

This is so weird, I could have written this question and came here to ask something very similar. (Like even the details are practically identical? Weird...!)

My question is, if a HS student withdraws from a class after 3rd quarter, do they receive a semester grade for that class (which would presumably be calculated as part of their GPA?)

If they withdraw before the end of the marking period, does the grade still go on the report card?

Similarly, if they enroll in a class only for 4th quarter, do they get a semester of credit? Grades? What happens??

OP, I can confirm that it is possible to switch to an elective class for 4th quarter, at least if admin thinks there is a good reason for it

Grades and credits shall be awarded according to the following guidelines:
a) If a student withdraws from a course before the end of the fifth week
(25 school days), no notation is made on the student's permanent
record or report card.
b) If the student withdraws after the end of the fifth week (25 school
days) of the course, "withdrew" or "W", the date of the withdrawal,
and the grade averaged to the time of withdrawal will be entered on
the report card and permanent record.
c) Should the student transfer to a course in the same subject area,
credit is awarded for those courses completed successfully.

That makes sense for reports cards but what happens on the transcript? Is that what they mean by "permanent record?"

For example, student is enrolled in Hateful Class B, earning a 75% / C grade, and withdraws on the last day of 3rd quarter marking period.

Not a graduation requirement.

What goes on the transcript?

Yes what goes on the transcript? The “W” only? Or the grade upon withdrawal next to that as well on transcript? Where would they have space for more than the “W”?

Wait so if you withdraw btwn 3rd and 4th quarter you could get an entire semester credit for just the 4th quarter of a class but zero credit for the 3rd quarter?

That can't be right

My oldest graduated from high school last year and I am not aware of any class that is one quarter only. Your kid would be missing half the assignments. It wasn't suggested for my kid, but maybe it's at the discretion of each school administration?

When DS was getting awful grades in AP Calc BC, his counselor at Walter Johnson told him he had missed the cut-off to withdraw without a "withdraw" mark on his transcript, and that he should work with the professor to get his grades back up. We got my kid a tutor and he worked intensively and finished with a C for that semester (he had a B the first semester). The counselor seemed to think that a switch in classes would reflect more poorly than powering through, vis-a-vis college admissions. He got into UMD Honors, W&M, that sort of college.
