If the aliens cannot read minds, how do they get into people's minds like when they show only specific people a specific countdown, or torture them with person-specific visions?

Their technology is so far ahead of ours that essentially it’s no different than magic to us. It’s like if we tried to explain air travel to a caveman—he wouldn’t have the foggiest notion what we were talking about, even if we explained it clearly. It’s very convenient for the show because then they don’t have to explain it to the audience!

they can alter the visual field but they can't read minds. sure, you just have to accept it as part of the show. but these do seem different to me. they obviously struggle with human thought in general.

So they are able to affect just one person's eyes, not their brain. That makes sense.
