The other thread about the middle class earner only bringing in a million dollars a year got me thinking.
What is the definition of working, lower, middle, and upper class? |
|
Me (no matter who is speaking): Middle Class
Anyone who asked more: Upper Class Anyone who makes less: working class and lower middle |
|
This is an endless debate on DCUM.
British class system from my understanding is aristocracy/middle class (professionals)/working class (blue collar). US seems more income-based. |
|
Let's see: how many ways can we possibly ask this question?
|
| Anything below 150k is poor. Middle class is 150k-300k, UMC is 300-1M, upper is 1M+ |
That's about right, but below 90k is poor |
lol |
|
My make $20k a year working very part time. My investments bring in $200k a year. Not having to work for money was always the goal. Still middle class?
|
Correct |

If you have to work for a living, you’re working class.
If you can live off investments and not elderly, you’re wealthy. There’s no other meaningful distinctions. |
God I hate people who say this |
What investments? |
That’s silly. If I make $1M/year and have $5M in investments, and I’m in my 40s, and my family and I like to live large, we’re still wealthier than the retiree with $1M who lives comfortably on social security and investment income. He doesn’t have to work for a living, but I’m still richer. |
| The mistake most people make is conflating wealth with class. |
They are mostly inseparable in the US. Class is basically where you live, income, assets and education background. |
