My child and us (the parents ) don’t want her/him to go on a multi-day trip for school. What excuses can we use so that he/she can be excused by the school (mcps).
Would a dr note help…if so what reasons could the doctor write on the note to excuse the absence. We can’t say she is sick…bc payment is due 1 week before the trip and it’s quite expensive. Money is not an issue. Sorry if writing is not clear, English is not my native language. |
| You do not need a medical reason to decline a field trip— especially an overnight one. Simply don’t sign the permission slip, or write a note saying your child will not be going on the field trip. Your child should ask the teacher if there is alternate work he/she can do instead. |

What subject has a required expensive multi-day trip?
The only time I've heard of it is for something like band, and then obviously they tell you before the end of the drop period. Otherwise, I have never heard of this? |
| Just decline. You don’t owe them an explanation. Our band trio is insanely expensive for what it is. |
| Just decline. Your kid will have to do uninspiring busywork while everyone else is gone, but it’s not an issue. |
| My kid is doing a three day trip to the Wallops NASA flight center later this month, near Chincoteague. They will be doing some submersible stuff with NASA engineers and kiddo is super excited about it. Why the trepidation about an away trip for a high school student? College is around the corner. That's going to be more than three days. |

It's not a problem just to say your child won't be attending. People have conflicts like your child may need to take care of a sibling, another relative, or work. Kids have responsibilities that go beyond school and teachers are prepared to excuse it.
I've seen this excused for an athlete who needed the time to prepare for some competition so no need to make excuses OP. |
| If you want to have a medical note just don't have them put a reason. Just say your child won't be able to attend. |
What school is this because that sounds amazing. I’m assuming Poolesville? Or a special school with a program? |
| NP. I think it's Blair magnet. |
| Just opt out. There's no requirement for multi-day field trips. Not even outdoor ed which is part of the curriculum. |
| Op here. Thank you all for the wonderful advice! |
Op here. So the note could just “say students name will not be able to attend field trip. Signed, the doctor.? “ The note does not have to contain the reason why? |
You don’t even need a doctor’s note. Just don’t return the signed permission slip. If you do want to send a note, send an email to the coordinator and say your child will not be attending the trip. You don’t have to state a reason. If they’re pushy enough to ask why (which they really shouldn’t), you can say it’s “for personal reasons.” There’s no legal requirement for them to go on a trip like this. |
Op here. thank you for the specifics. We are immigrants and are new to the school system here. Thanks again! |
