Where to get a primer on high schools

Anonymous
Moving to the area. Don’t know where to start. 2 bright kids. One into sports. One a theater/ music / creative type. One on the spectrum. Both iffy at math. Where do we begin figuring out where to buy or rent?

Welcome to the area. Where will everyone be working? What’s your budget? Commute and budget drive the housing search more than schools around here.

Where are you coming from? Are you sensitive to drugs, fights and weapons in schools? If so, buckle up, cause MCPS high schools are rife with these issues.

Take everything on these boards with a large amount of salt

Have you considered another county? Or state?

1. a residence you like and can afford,
2. in a neighborhood you like,
3. with transportation options that work for your family's transportation needs.

As you see, many of the "cheerleader" comments are written directly by the MCPS Central Office staff (over 50% on average).

When you find a house that you might want to purchase (Zillow, Redfin etc), type in that street address into the MCPS school locator.
https://gis.mcpsmd.org/SchoolAssignmentTool2/AddressInput.xhtml

Each school has a school profile (just search "MCPS" the school name with a file type of PDF). This contains the details about the school. Pay close attention to the statistics.

Something to keep in mind is that Boundary Studies could change your school designation, so monitor this website carefully for those discussions as they occur.

There is also a school safety report to consider that lists the incidents at each school.
https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/regulatoryaccountability/SafetyGlance/currentyear/SafetyGlance2022.pdf

You can use US News and World Report.
https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/maryland

Be careful and double-check the results using GreatSchools, Patch, etc. The reason is that someone has been tampering with official numbers (ex. Wootton is listed as 17% math proficiency but is actually 88% according to the Maryland State website).

Good luck!

OP, this is a huge county so we need some context.. not just budget (though that is important to know) but also location (do you want to be near the city for commuting?), preference for urban/suburban/rural setting, importance to you of having so diversity in the school in terms of race/ethnicity/income level, etc. Provide that and we can be more helpful.

The same kid will get the same education at any of them. They offer more or less the same curriculum and hire from the same teacher pool. There are some differences in test score averages but this reflects SES differences. In fact, if they show scores by school by HHI you'll see they're more or less the same. Basically, live in any area you like. If you buy into the test average myth, then look at a heatmap for HHI.

If you're more interested in things like college outcomes, I suggest you look at the college outcomes published by moco360.
