DC is in HS and wanted to take 2 Health classes this summer. It looks like it is $350 per class. Is this new?

They used to charge before the pandemic, but I believe they used federal funds to make it free for all. Now they are back to charging and believe they raised it by $50 over the previous amount. There are discounts for those who qualify for FARMs.

They might be free for kids that fail classes or FARMS

I think it’s only free if you are retaking a core course for graduation credit.

Yes, summer school was never free until the federal ESSER funding during the pandemic. That funding has run out.

In the past, before covid, there was a fee. With covid, they got extra funding so they used that to cover summer school. Those funs have stopped so they are back to charging again.

They have to pay McKnight 1.3 million so you have to pay for summer health

$350 is reasonable.

Nope. Especially not free for kids who failed the first time.

Kids have gotten used to failing and “being able to take it in the summer” because it’s less work and more fun to goof off during class.

Now they get to feel the pain of failing—or at least their parents will.

That’s not how it was before Covid. Haven’t checked the new rules though. Recover the cost was $300 per class.

+1

Also, $350 is completely reasonable. Taxpayers don’t need to fund your kid being able to graduate early or that kid who failed Math because they had 40+ absences. Some of these kids also don’t realize that there are a limited number of campuses (two I think?) and not a lot of space. Key takeaway: maybe they should pass the class the first time.

It will not be free for anyone. Students who failed are not an exception and will have to pay. There is reduced cost for FARMS but not by much.

Health ed is a dumb requirement and some kids like mine take it so they can do things they enjoy like music. Not all kids do summer school to graduate early or they failed.
