Sending a friend who lives in another country a book as a gift, she is an avid reader and I would love to send a novel set in DC because I am trying to get her to visit.
She reads everything, I think! Ideas? |
Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders springs to mind. It's historical fiction, of course, so if you're looking for something about modern-day DC it won't work. |
Echo House by Ward Just
The Last of the Southern Girls by Willie Morris Fellow Travelers by Thomas Mallon |
The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears by Dinaw Mengestu
|
The beautiful things that heaven beats
All aunt Hagar's children (short stories) |
The House of Eve is partially set here, but it's not modern. |
I really enjoy political thriller books set in DC such as Dan Brown The Lost Symbol and Brad Meltzer books. |
Heartburn! |
+1 for this |
The entire George Pelecanos catalog (The Sweet Forever is my favorite) and Edward P. Jones's collection of short stories Lost in the City.

Something by Gore Vidal? |
Horse by Geraldine Brooks is mostly a historical fiction novel but one of its plot lines is present day and set in DC. |
Came here to say this! Also Thank You for Smoking and a lot of other novels by the same author are very DC politico insider. Often funny and irreverent. |
As a teen I loved the Margaret Truman mysteries, but I suspect I’d be underwhelmed by them as an adult. |
