Clindamycin for repeat strep in kid

Anonymous
My 5yo has had strep 5 times in 4 months and it’s clear now that he is a carrier and/or not clearing the infection. After months of Amoxicillin and Cefdinir, we are now trying Clindamycin which our pediatrician is hopeful will knock it out for good.

Has anyone else’s child tried this for repeat strep with a positive outcome?

Yes. We did.

My daughter had repeated strep when she was about 18mos old. Pediatrician referred to ENT. ENT said I’m not doing surgery on an 18 month old for tonsil removal. He referred us to Infectious Disease doctor. He prescribed Clindamycin. She has never had strep since and is 15 years old. It was wonderful in our experience

We did and still ended up with the removal.

I had strep 4 times in 3 months when I was a teenager and clindamycin, along with a course of prednisone finally cleared it up. It was 15 years before I got it again and penicillin cleared it up easily.

My son had strep 8 times one year. It didn’t stop coming back until we threw out all of his valved water bottles. We had been changing his toothbrush, toothpaste, and running everything through the dishwasher, but something just wasn’t getting clean.

Yes, we tried that antibiotic too and it didn’t work. Tonsils had to come out.

Thanks, that’s one I didn’t think about. May have to try.

Did you do a full or partial tonsillectomy?

Ugh my five year old had strep three weeks ago, finished the antibiotics and had it again! Is it normal to need two rounds of antibiotics or am I now on the recurrent strep train?!

also, if you have a dog, kids can pass strep to the dog and the dog can become an asymptomatic carrier and continually give it back to the kids

We did the full removal — @ age 5 and recovery had no complications and was manageable, they took the aednoids too when they got in there

I think that was the one that finally did it for my middle kid but we were also referred to an ENT and he got his adenoids removed eventually too.

I tried as an adult, twice. Didn't work and I had to get my tonsils out.

Make sure to give the baby probiotics with all those antibiotics.
