What's the over under on MCPS closing school due to the eclipse?

Maryland will be experiencing a partial eclipse on 4/8 from about 2:00 pm to 4:33 pm. We've known this was coming for literally years. But mcps being the agent of chaos will probably either cancel or turn the eighth into a half day at the last minute.

Nice try, but no.

Is this an April Fool's post, and if so, who is the fool?

I have heard that schools in the totality areas are closing (upstate NY) but it would be ridiculous here.

Have they ever closed schools in the past for an eclipse?

My daughter attends a boarding school in the path of totality. They didn’t use up their snow days this year. School sent out notice that April 8 is day off of school. I thought that was a great idea.

For my son in MCPS, I offered his teacher that I would purchase glasses for her class if she would take them outside.

My guess there are liability issues there.

I think it would be smart if they did close early.

About as likely as preventing an unpowered ship the size of the Eiffel Tower from hitting a bridge pylon - MCPS reacts with similar speed and accuracy.

Why on earth would they close if they're not in the totality?!? It's just a few minutes of shade, for goodness' sakes!

Our town will be at about 95% totality. Schools aren't canceled or closing early. It will hit when DS will be on the bus home so I plan to pick him up early so he can watch it from our deck.

MCPS isn't going to sacrifice instruction time (teaching to the test) to inspire the next Einstein or Hawking. Why would they cancel school or even do lessons around this solar eclipse? Fwiw, I was an mcps student 1,000 years ago. There was a solar eclipse and, for a week ahead of it, we discussed it in all classes. Not the entire class, but the eclipse was incorporated into math, social studies, science, english, art, even pe. The day of, the whole school was brought outside and we were able to view it through special shadow boxes we made. No one looked at the sun, no one got hurt. I will always remember that day. My kids will not be attending school that day. They will have my week of eclipse leaning packed into one day and then we'll check out the eclipse.

Schools across the country are considering this. Stop looking for reasons to blast MCPS.
