Summer school and sports?

I’m struggling with what to do about summer school. DS plays his sport at a competitive level and might need to miss 2 days of summer school as he’s already committed to travel. I recall that if you miss a class online, you don’t get credit. Is this true for the in person regional summer school classes too?
